Stevie To Tour with Petty for Third Leg

Maybe she isnt going to be in Atlanta? Her dates haven't been confirmed yet, according to the Nicksfix. The classic Rock station here in Philly hasn't mentioned her either.

I really wouldn't take lack of advertising Stevie's appearance to mean that she isn't going to be there. First, she is probably still finalizing her schedule and doesn't want anything mentioned until she's a definite.

More importantly, I don't think they are going to do any heavy advertising of Stevie because so many people will get the wrong impression. If you didn't have the same info we have, and heard "special guest Stevie Nicks", you may very well think she is the opening act or at least doing more than a couple of duets. Which could lead to confusion and disappointment among some ticket buyers.

It's Tom's tour and, no offense to Stevie, he doesn't need her to sell tickets. I'll bet they start mentioning her on the radio once she confirms, but I'd be surprised to see any print ads announcing her.

who gets to attend a Tom Petty show (Be it with or without Stevie) should consider themselves lucky since he is YET AGAIN skipping the Oklahoma market (Tulsa & OKC).

That's all fine and dandy - and likely true - but I am not shelling out like $100 and hauling myself all the way to South Atlanta unless that hooker is singing Insider with Tom Thus, if she ain't advertised, I ain't a going~

Priceless.
I got tix to the Hollywood Bowl. They were pretty cheap, and the bowl is fun.
Plus, I like Tom. I suspect she will show up, but whatever.

Hell, I don't know. It was less than 200 for a pair. Like 175 or something ?

Funny, I was onstage there this weekend and the house looks tiny from the stage. Parking, however, is hellish. Fun to bring a picnic though.

Some old stuff, some new and maybe surprises

If you have tickets to see Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers on Sunday night at White River, you may get more than you bargained for, and you may get less.

On the first eight shows of the tour, which began June 9, Stevie Nicks was a surprise guest, joining in on a few songs, including her 1981 hit with Petty, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around."

The band has announced that Nicks will be showing up for some dates on the second leg of the tour, which starts Saturday in Portland, followed by White River.

But even more intriguing is the possibility that another singer who joined the band for a few songs earlier on the tour could possibly do so again on Sunday. Because he lives here. And he's not doing anything right now.

Eddie Vedder sang "The Waiting" and "American Girl" with his longtime pal Petty when Pearl Jam opened four Petty & the Heartbreakers shows in late June and early July. Pearl Jam's U.S. tour ended last weekend with two shows at the Gorge, and the European/Australian leg doesn't start until Aug. 23 in Dublin, so Vedder has the time. Whether he has the inclination is another question. He may be there. And he may not.

You may not make it to the show either if you got your tickets from a scalper or from a Petty fan-club member who purchased pre-sale tickets through the club. More than 1,400 ticketholders have been turned away from various shows on the tour, according to Billboard, because they got their tickets in those unauthorized ways.

Peter Bogdanovich and crew may also be at White River, because the famous director is making a documentary about the band.

The show here will be the first since the release Tuesday of Petty's third solo album, "Highway Companion," so expect to hear songs from it, including the first single, "Saving Grace." Petty, at 55, tackles Big Questions on the new CD, such as aging, mortality and his legacy.

Petty says that this will be the band's last big tour, so they'll have to bring out the big guns, hits like "Breakdown," "Don't Do Me Like That," "Refugee," "Runnin' Down A Dream" and "The Waiting."

Tom Petty, MLB teaming up

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are on the road this summer, marking their 30-year anniversary by selling out halls all over the country and attracting big-name special guests and opening acts.
But that doesn't mean Petty doesn't have time to continue creating timeless American rock n' roll music.

He's done it once again with his third solo album, Highway Companion, and early reviews indicate it's among the best of his career.

As part of the celebration, Petty and Major League Baseball are teaming up to make Highway Companion available at MLB.com.

Petty and the Heartbreakers also performed the first single, "Saving Grace," for broadcast on rehearsals.com, the state-of-the-art behind-the-scenes Web site powered by the famed Southern California rehearsal space CenterStaging and MLB Advanced Media.

And all of this is being observed by famed film director Peter Bogdanovich, who is working on a full-length documentary about Tom and the Heartbreakers' classic tale of rock success.

"It's a great story that's very American, as I say, and the material, the music, continues to be terrific," Bogdanovich said in a recent interview with rehearsals.com. "Over 30 years, and I don't know how many hits they've had, but many."

There figure to be quite a few more from Highway Companion, which was produced with Jeff Lynne and features Petty playing many of the instruments, including drums.

"Saving Grace" has become more and more of a show-stopper on the summer tour.

At a recent tour stop in St. Paul, Minn., Petty introduced the number by saying "I really like this one," and he wasn't the only one.

From the John Lee Hooker-esque lead guitar riff that takes you back to Petty's Gainesville, Fla., rock roots to the cryptic lyrics, including the pivotal line, "You're confident but not really sure," it's a song that creeps into your subconscious the more you hear it.

The same goes for many of the other tracks on Highway Companion, including the plaintive ballad "Square One" and "Down South," a moving number that has some of Petty's most introspective lyrics in years.

"Create myself down south/Impress all the women/Pretend I'm Samuel Clemens/Wear seersucker and white linens," Petty sings.

"Chase a ghost down south/Spirits cross the dead fields/Mosquitoes hit the windshield/All documents remain sealed."

"I just think it's a classic," Bogdanovich says of "Down South."

"It's moody, reflective, it's got a beautiful tune and it's a very personal song, I think. He started in the South, his roots are there, and it's a beautiful ballad. I think it's very personal to him. I think it means a lot to him."

What also means a lot to Petty is the reception he's been getting on the road for his Highway Companion Tour.

He's been pulling out a good portion of his ever-growing hit catalog, with almost-nightly performances of classics "Listen To Her Heart," "You Don't Know How It Feels," "I Won't Back Down," "Free Fallin'," "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "Learning To Fly," "Don't Come Around Here No More," "Refugee," "Runnin' Down A Dream" and "American Girl."

Stevie Nicks has been and will be a special guest for much of the tour, contributing her legendary vocals to rare live songs "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "Insider" and "I Need To Know."

And the opening acts have been eclectic and brilliant, with former Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and Pearl Jam already having supported Petty, and the Allman Brothers Band, the Strokes, John Mayer, the Derek Trucks Band and Frank Black to come.

In other words, three decades after he started, it's still an exciting time to be a Tom Petty fan.

"Tom has been successful for 30 years because he's got an enormous amount of talent and an extraordinary determination, and a great sense of morality and ethics," Bogdanovich said.

"His music stands the test of time because it ... appealed to a lot of people from a lot of different places, a lot of different walks of life."
