Just got back. We're done. It has spread to his lungs, so that's that. She said no more chemo, and that it wouldn't do any good to remove the tumor on his side. Just to wait now. She said it could be two weeks, or might be months.

I guess I knew all along that this was inevitable. Melanoma only has about a 10% survival rate. She said that he's done better, and lived longer, than any cancer patient that they've ever had, with the worst kind of cancer you can get. And that there are no "what ifs" for me, that we've done everything humanly possible. She said that I'll know when it's time to end it all, that he'll change, and not be Cash anymore(become withdrawn). Like I said earlier, his initial prognosis was 6-9 months, and we're beginning month 19 now. So, I guess I should feel lucky for the extra time we've had.

This is so ****ing unfair. We've been inseparable for eight and a half years.

That just makes me cry. I'm so so sorry - but you've had a great friend for 8 and a half years...and for now he's with you - so just cherish the time left and love that little guy like never before.

I'm really sorry you have to go through this

It is, I'm so sorry. His survival for this long is a testament to your love and care. It's going to be very hard but you will be okay. Again I am so sorry. Cancer sucks.

I'm sorry Homer. I wish there were something I could do. It really is unfair. These little creatures are placed into our lives and make such a huge impact. They teach us how to love and how to treat others. I wish you all the best in the coming weeks and hope that Cash is as comfortable as he possibly can be. I am truly sorry.

Thank you, guys. My head is ready to explode, from crying all day.
I did call U of IL, and they're supposed to call me back, within this hour. It's so hard for me to give up. I want(need) to hear a second opinion, that they also feel, that further chemo will do no good.

***believe it or not, they just called. They said that there's possibly one more drug that might slow the progression in his lungs. Since most of the vets at U of IL are "residents", they want to confer with the Oncology Dept head tomorrow, then contact my vet.

I mean, it's certainly not a cure, but might buy him some more time. I know this sounds a little selfish, and I would agree, if he didn't still feel good, playing and the like(we just came in from playing ball).
I hope my vet's not upset that I kinda "went over her head" with a second opinion(if she is, she'll just have to get over it).
Thanks again for all the support.

I am so sorry to hear about Cash. Maybe this might be another chance for him at the U of IL. Either way I am sure that he knows that he is loved and cared for by you.

BTW, by friend's dog Bandit isn't doing very well at all but he is still hanging in there. She takes him to the vet 3 times a week and is not giving up on him either.

Oh I'm so sorry- I don't even know what to say. I hope you get good news from the U of IL, and if that doesn't work out, I wish you lots of strength for these next few weeks/months. So so sorry. xoxoxoxo

I know. You just get so attached to them. If someone had told me in the beginning that I'd end up spending 13K, I wouldn't have believed them. And even though I'm damned near broke now, I'd find a way to spend more, if it could help him.
Good luck to Bandit.
