how weird, i dropped mine on some rocks and broke it a couple weeks ago, and i just got my replacement today. i decided to go for an ultra-compact panasonic fx01. it's 6 mp with 3.6 optical zoom, and it was right around the $300 mark. i really like it, and dpreview.com gave it a good review.
good luck, and let us know what you pick!
