Actually... it's supposed to be "all right," as two words. "Alright" is considered to be incorrect.

Usage Note: Despite the appearance of the form alright in works of such well-known writers as Langston Hughes and James Joyce, the single word spelling has never been accepted as standard. This is peculiar, since similar fusions such as already and altogether have never raised any objections. The difference may lie in the fact that already and altogether became single words back in the Middle Ages, whereas alright has only been around for a little more than a century and was called out by language critics as a misspelling. Consequently, one who uses alright, especially in formal writing, runs the risk that readers may view it as an error or as the willful breaking of convention.
The moral of the story... two wrongs don't make an "all right."

and even more on it:

Main Entry: al·right
Pronunciation: (")ol-'rIt, 'ol-"
Function: adverb or adjective
: ALL RIGHT
usage The one-word spelling alright appeared some 75 years after all right itself had reappeared from a 400-year-long absence. Since the early 20th century some critics have insisted alright is wrong, but it has its defenders and its users. It is less frequent than all right but remains in common use especially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite common in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing .

Personally, I think it is acceptable to use.

You're correct about "alot" being incorrect, but you're incorrect about "a part" being correct.

I think Merriam-Webster Online is exaggerating; "alright" isn't "in common use" in journalistic publications. In every newspaper & magazine I've ever read, "alright" is a proscribed solecism. In fact, the journalist's Bible--the Associated Press Stylebook--year after year, revision after revision, tells writers to avoid "alright."

It may be acceptable to this person or that person, but the one-word form is censured in every important usage guide: from Fowler to Gowers to Follett to Barzun to Garner to Copperud to Bernstein & on & on & on, including all the reliable house style guides such as NY Times, Chicago Manual of Style & MLA.

If you want reliable & accurate usage guidance online, avoid Merriam-Webster dictionaries (widely known & proud of their descriptivist approach to usage) & use instead the American Heritage Dictionary at Bartleby: www.bartleby.com/61/

Another helpful guide is the American Heritage Book of English Usage--online at Bartleby at www.bartleby.com/64/.

I use "alright" only when I'm singing "That's Alright" by the legendary Stevie Nicks!

And, while we're at it, can we review the uses of "their", "there" & "they're"?

THEY'RE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE!!!

As well as "hear" & "here".

THEY'RE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, EITHER!!!
