i saw Grace with Jefferson Starship and I have to say, her presence on stage was a little shticky for my taste.
She was great in her time, and I'm sure Crosby was high as a kite when he made the comparison.
Stevie had a lot more in common with Janis Joplin on stage -

I like David Crosby's singing on Street Angel.

Actually I always read Graces comment about middle age rockers as to relating more to her "eras" rockers. And in some cases I agree with her, alot of the songs that were written during that time leave a bit to be desired when sung by middle aged people (imagine the Doors touring middle aged ). Minus the Stones I don't think there is any 60's group that I would want to see live right now...As for Grace even if she were still performing I could only think of seeing her out of curiosity and for a reasonable price, her songs just aren't ment for an older person to be singing them, they HAVE to be sung by a younger person, think about it does a 50 year old singing White Rabbit Sombody to Love or We Can Be Together (up against the wall motherf****) really appeal?

Stevie on the other hand is lucky in that her songs don't need to be sung by a younger person, however that has it's drawbacks as well, none of her songs defined an age, the way a couple of Graces did. But I don't think one way is better then the other, just different.

I too saw Jefferson Starship in 1983 (Winds of Change tour I think?) and she sounded fabulous, her stage presence was strong but, for all that, she didn't have half the originality as Stevie. Don't get me wrong, I do love Grace and her fabulous, off-the-wall persona. I could listen to "Fast Buck Fredddie" all day, just to hear that amazing tremolo. But she's hardly a songwriter to speak of and her "contribution" to Jefferson Starship always seemed commercially calculated in a way that damaged her reputation as the "It" girl of summer 1968.

I came too this post very late but I read through it and was surprised that no one mentioned the obvious disdain Slick has shown for Nicks over the years. Though FM toured with JS in 75, the VH1 "Women in Rock" special that aired a few years back reveals Slick can barely tolerate Nicks. When Nicks was being honored in (I think) the number 15 spot, Grace delivered a brfief but biting remark: "Oh, Stevie Nicks, the Magical witch." Her voice dripped with sarcasm and disdain. It was funny but also disrespectful--one of the things I love aboout Grace. I just didn't think she'd earned the right to criticize Nicks whose contributions to rock have been consistently remarkable.

In Stevie's segment, Grace was shown saying "Oh, the witch, the magic witch, I love her." Hardly biting or disdainful, and I heard not a hint of sarcasm in it. Why would VH1 include a disdainful remark in a special that's celebrating the women of rock and roll? I think you're reading too much into it just because Grace is a salty bitch. If I remember correctly, that interview took place after Grace contributed to the Crow: City of Angels soundtrack and Hole's version of Gold Dust Woman was brought up.

I just didn't think she'd earned the right to criticize Nicks whose contributions to rock have been consistently remarkable.

Are you serious? Forget for a moment that there would be no Stevie Nicks without Grace Slick (and Joplin) pioneering the role of the "female rocker" and look at Stevie's contributions over the years. If anyone can call them consistent & remarkable with a straight face, they shall get a sugar cookie.

i find grace slick's comments about mature artists to be rather dumb, and i highly suspect that they are driven by her inability to maintain her own singing career in later years.
fans of artists like mccartney, debbie harry, and (even) stevie have good reasons to keep pleased with what they're still getting, on the other hand, grace slick's last years in commercial recording (exhibit a: We Built This City) were indeed something to keep one embarrassed about for years.
grace had tons of attitude and abilities, but nothing much to back it up in other aspects; she couldn't break free from her own "fleetwood mac", record her own "bella donna", and recreate a significant musical/iconic impact in her own right.
what i find interesting is how she didn't manage to consolidate a proper recognition to her contribution to rock's evolution, stevie, on the other hand, seems to be obsessed by those efforts in the last few years.
in a way, grace slick is like those chinese that sailed to america; history is being written by winners, and janis became the Columbus.

hmmm. I didn't really pick up on the sarcasm or disrespect either. I do remember the clip ended quickly after she said that, as if she went on to say other things. Maybe the clue lies in what she said after that. I just take it for what it's worth.

I dont think Grace gives a rats A** about the music legacy anymore, she never went to the RHOF intros, I think she finds it all silly a bunch of people self congratulating eachother, exactly the type of thing they were rebeling against in the 60's. I would also bet she has moved on, she does have a kid (and a grandkid) and she is also an artist, Stevie on the other hand has little in her life but her musical legacy, hence her immense caring about it. I think in many ways Steive said it best, she (stevie) is still a teenager in her head, I highly doubt Grace is, and I think that's part of why she just won't tour anymore, I have no doubt she has the pipes, I just don't think she has the interest...

Oh and little known Grace fact, she is among the only performers to due all three festivals: Monteray, Woodstock, and Altamont, the rise, the pinnacle and the fall...

Oh and I'll echo dissentions opinion on this, are you serious!? Grace has a "right" to criticize anyone she wants in that industry, she paid her dues, penned some incredible songs, sang some major anthems and gave some awesome performances, she NOT stevie was one of rocks female pioneers, sorry but Stevie is a second generation who followed Grace, Janis, Joni, Cher, Mama Cass, Diana Ross...to name a few. Although I will consent Stevie is one of the first women to sucessfully be in a band and have a solo career at the same time, and many props to her.

Yep. Salty bitch. That's all. I don't think Grace was dissing Stevie, it's just that flowing shawls and chiffon are not Grace's thing so she had a bit of playfulness in her response about the grand caped one. Look, I think Grace probably respects Stevie's rock chickness, it's just her style that she can't really get with, at least that's my speculation.

David said it best when he essentially described how Stevie and her schtick can provoke an animosity that can trigger hatred in some people. When she's good, she's good. When she's bad & obnoxious & utterly ridiculous, she's a chore to even look at.
