Yes. Most of the album was recorded on Petty's 1985 tour, but "Insider" & "Needles & Pins" were taped live at the Forum in 1981.

Also, do you know if they did Insider on these other dates you posted she showed up at?

I believe so--Irvine, for example, & I think San Francisco.

I've been suggesting for years that we offer to trade a lot of the master reel stuff with the Heartbreakers for 1981 audio or even video of Tom & Stevie onstage.

It's a beautiful song, one of the best ballads she has ever sung. And the intensity she reaches in the live version is just great, also for the chemistry she has onstage with Tom Petty, far more than with Don Henley. IMO Petty/Nicks live wouldn't have nothing to envy to Buckingham/Nicks live.

Does anyone else freeek out at the end of the live version when Stevie coos the "Oooo.... oooo.... ooooo..... oo-oo welll........"

I think that was her introduction to her vocal zenith. The trilogy of "Gypsy", "That's Alright" and "Straight Back" came right after this performance. That was the pinnacle of her voice. The Wild Heart was the beginning of the deconstruction.

That part sounds like four people singing out of the same throat and it is amazing to say the least.

So basically you boys are saying that Stevie's best years vocally were 81-82? I would tend to agree with that althought I still think she had it in 83.

I also think she had a remarkable voice for SA, The Dance, and Enchanted - in fact, her voice now is still pretty good when she chooses to use it in anything other than a rote manner a la Circle Dance, B&B, and R&R on this last tour.

IMO - in 83, she had moments of brilliance a la the Nightbird television performances. But, some of the boots of the WH and Mirage concerts are torture to listen to for me because I can hear her voice failing.

Absolutely. However, in '83 her voice started to go due to the cigarette smoking. The "magic" part of her voice (mainly her unique vibrato) was lost after '84, with only occasional appearances here and there after that. Late 1984 through 1987 the voice was a burnt out rasp and from 1988 on it's only been a buzz.

But, like I said- there are occasional moments when she gets out of that droning buzz and gets it going (the end of "Running Through the Garden" comes to mind).

I thought she started smoking in 86 when she left rehab the first time.

I don't think so. I believe she starting smoking around or just after the Wild Heart album. I've seen pictures of her holding cigarette packs in pictures from 84/85.
