Good ol' John McVie.

He keeps the spirit of Charles Mingus alive in the world of the 4-minute pop song.

John is truly, for a number of sensible reasons, one of the six or eight genuine heroes in the phony pop world -- but you can't tell him so, for it's the hero-worship itself that sickens John. So if you love McVie, you're forever locked in a sort of postmodern decentered regression into a pat-on-the-back dialectic.

John is the Humphrey Bogart of rock music.
