Not to worry, you and I and Celine all suck at something.

My favorite Celine Dion Sucks Moment was during the rehearsals for the first VH1 Divas Live. Carole King (who is the complete opposite of Celine Dion) was sitting at the piano rehearsing "You've Got A Friend" with Celine, Gloria Estafan, and Shania Twain. In the midst of rehearsing, Carole decides to go over a particular vocal part- Celine decides to do her typical over-emoting by taking the phrase and adding multiple-gymnastics-notes and Carole stops her dead her tracks and says, "No, no, no- just one note. Not a lot of notes- just one note." You could tell that Carole was irritated by the whole thing.

I was like Goldie Hawn's character from Death Becomes Her, where she was watching the Madeline Ashton movie where Madeline is being strangled to death. Helen (Goldie's character) keeps rewinding the tape over and over and over to savor the moment.

Don't even attempt to lump Celine Dion into the same world as Aretha Franklin... for shame.

ON EDIT: The video for that song makes it a thousand times worse than the song is by itself. It's mid-80's dreck at it's worst.

Kim Carnes: Chain Letter

Though I like the sappiness of it (sucker for the sappy), the lyrics are awful:

"I read your letter and it feels like chains, yeah. I read your letter and it's chaining me to you!"

If I had a barfing emoticon, it clearly would be used now!

You know, my mom (who tends to listen to a lot of modern music these days, while I'm buying old FM albums, so clearly we should be switching places) talked about how "What You Waiting For" and "Hollaback Girl" were crappy songs for the longest time and then all of sudden she bought the CD and she keeps playing it in her car. There are only a few tracks she doesn't like. I don't want one of my own, though. It seems that I preferred her in No Doubt.

It's so funny, though! Of course it's funny because it's bad.

I try to ignore modern Celine Dion to a degree. Yes, she plays around too much. I love her French music, as I've said at least eighty times. I made the mistake of buying an album of a concert in Paris because it has performances of some of my favorite songs (not just of hers but of all time) like "Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore" and "Les Derniers Seront Les Premiers" and I was so, soooooooooo disappointed because she ruined all her own songs by playing with them. They were perfect on the original albums but she put all kinds of acrobatics with them that didn't belong on this CD. It was awful. And what was even worse was that in this song called "Un Garcon Pas Comme Les Autres," she had children singing with her! You have to understand how ridiculously inappropriate that is because the song is about the pain of being in love with someone who's gay! Why was was a childrens' chorus singing along? That really baffled me. And I have this other live CD that someone got me as a gift that was yet another Paris concert in which she was singing "Le Monde Est Stone," which is quite dark and talks about wanting to die and she had to make all these stupid noises when she did it live! It was totally inappropriate!

So, I know what you're talking about. But I will always love the album versions of many of her songs. Some are just plain beautiful and have wonderful lyrics (not written by her, of course). Plus, I performed "Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore" twice at my university (and I didn't play with it ), and I got numerous compliments and people telling me that I should be a professional singer, etc. I don't deserve that and it saddens me to an extent because I'd love to be a singer, but "Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore" will always be very close to me because of that.
