Default losing highly sentimental things....

Okay, I need to vent about something.....

So, my Dad is selling our house and he is moving to KY and I am staying in Atlanta to go to college. He was painting our spare bedroom and I had this cariciture (sp?) of me and my best friend Kevin sitting on the bed. Kevin was my best friend from about 2nd to 7th grade and it was the ONLY image of I had of the two of us together....it was drawn at a booth at Underground Atlanta in '98 I think- we went down there for my birthday....

So, I noticed it wasn't there anymore and I asked my dad where he put it, and he told me that he got paint on it and THREW IT AWAY , and then turned it around to make it my fault because I "leave my stuff all over the house and expect him to move it". He is such a f***** ass!!!!

I could just cry. and I know I can't do a f***** thing about it because it is GONE. I guess some people don't understand the concept of how some things are VERY important to people.

as part of the grieving process, does anyone have any stories of losing highly sentimental things? Please share.......

adam

Sorry about that that sucks - but the "you leave your stuff all over" thing- totally something my mom would have said

I actually can't think off the top of my head of any material possesion I've lost that was meaningful to me - there is only one I can think of that I would ABSOLUTELY DEVASTED if I lost.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I have lost pictures of people I've met that really made impressions on me for different reasons and it really hurts to know that I didn't take better care of it or save it in some way. In time, I learn to let it go. At this point, with my computer in the shop, I run the risk of losing all my years of Stevie music and pictures from every major trip I've had, including Vegas, so I may be in the same boat with you.

i can relate, when i was in 10th grade, back in 1984 (wow i am old ) my boyfriend at the time gave me a rumours tourbook, he brought it to school for me~ i had always kept it at home, but this 1 day i had brought it to school to use it to draw a pic of stevie from it for art class~ i put it in my locker just for lunch period, god forbid something get spilled on it~ well needless to say i was in lunch for like 20 mins & decided to go back to my locker~ guess what... someone had broken into it & stole my tourbook, along w/ my leather jacket & panties,,,i know what you are thinking, but my folks were divorced & i would spend half the week w/ 1 parent & the other half w/ the other, so i was in transition & had gotten some new clothes & was just taking them from 1 home to the other, now the leather jacket could be replaced, but at the time, there was no such thing as ebay & my tourbook was irreplacable to me ( i have since replaced it thru ebay) but it took like 20 yrs & i just couldn't believe someone would be so cruel to steal my stevie!!! ~ & why the panties...?, i don't wanna know~

sorry to hear of your drawing being tossed, i am very sentimental about things, i totally understand how you feel ~

Arrow Jill..

Your post cracked me up!! Not the tourbook (I understand that, that's horrible!! ), but the panties part. I don't wanna know, either.

I had my wallet stolen in high school and they took it to the boys bathroom and shoved it in the toilet. Some people are just dumba$$es.

Adam, I'm sorry about your caricature.

I don't have a ton of sentimental stuff. My teddy bear I've had since I was 2 that I still have...if anything happened to Teddy...I'd be devastated. He's my oldest possession.

when I first moved to the town Im in now, all I had was 1 suitcase and my jewelry box. I had just been terrorized by my mother in law who basically kept me prisoner in her car driving down mountain roads (anyone know where Quincy CA is? the feather river canyon in early spring still has 5ft snow and I was afraid she would dump me in the river) She pulled out half the hair on my head and we were punching each other in the front seat of the car...I was 5mo pregnant, with a 3 1/2 yr old. When I told my husband about it, he confronted his parents who kicked us out of their house. We went to Oroville and asked for help from the Salvation Army. We got a room but my husband took off with my car and left me at the motel. He never came back. My inlaws had all my stuff in a storage shed about 250 miles away they paid for and I never had the key. They took what they wanted and the rest got sold.

My first apt, I didnt have anything but the clothes on my back literally. I ate out of aluminum pie plates and did my laundry in the sink by hand (yuck, bleach water) for 2 years. I had no phone, no car, no friends, and no family except my grandparents who highly disapproved of me for being stupid enuff to marry a man who would leave me. In short, I literally had nothing.
and I had two kids to raise. I learned the hard way that things can be replaced, but your friends and family are what you count on. If you dont have that, hopefully you have your health. Its been many years but I think I have come a long way from those dark days...

good god, I am so sorry you went through that. I know from personal experience that those kind of things are extremely rough, but at least you know you are stronger and wiser now. And you are right, material things can be replaced; sometimes it's hard to know the value of people and things that really matter.

Yes, I have a story to share. I went into rehab after leaving my husband. All my stuff was at my mother's house and she had custody of my 3 year old daughter. While I was in rehab, she decided to sell the family home, take my daughter and move up north. After all the dust settled and life got back to "normal" (whatever that may be...) I discovered my one and only high school year book from senior year was gone as well as my daughter's baby book. I can't honestly think of two more precious pieces of sentiment that I've ever owned. When I asked her about them she acted like it was no big deal that they were gone. In my grieving and trying to make sense of the loss, I acknowledged a few things; my mother would never buy me a high school year book because they were too expensive (she was a single mother of 3 teenagers)... the year book I had was stolen. I really wanted a year book for my senior year. The baby book... she didn't want me to marry my husband and she didn't want me to have a baby. She wanted me to have an abortion and go into the Air Force. So all I could figure was, by getting rid of the year book and the baby book... it was her way of saying that I had something she didn't want me to have. The only thing I could figure about the year book was that she knew it was stolen as there were a couple of autographs that said "To (someone else)" and that would have pissed her off enough to throw it away. She is and always has been a very controlling person. So, I'm wondering if your dad perhaps didn't care too much for your friend? Perhaps your dad was jealous of your friendship? I dunno. Parents can be weird sometimes. It's like they don't even know they're hurting you or like they feel as tho they have a right to hurt you because they are your parents. Well, anyway... these are the things that make us grow up and actually want to move out and have a life AWAY from our parents! And that's a good thing, actually.

Hugs to you.... and remember crying is good too.

I'm sorry about your picture. I've lost several photos that were important to me. To this day there is no clue as to what might have happened to them. My mom never intentionally threw things away, but sometimes she'd clean out drawers and I think maybe my photos were in one of the drawers.

My 7th and 8th grade yearbooks are also gone. They were pretty much destroyed since they were just flimsy paper and I wasn't very careful with them. Instead of keeping the pages loose, I threw them away (stupid, stupid!).

So I know what it feels like. Along the way I've lost numerous little childhood trinkets and cool things I'd die to have back right now. For your most important items, maybe get a small chest with a key or something to keep them all in, that way your dad won't mess with your stuff again.

i thought that i had lost something, luckily it was found. my first love, ahh, we went to eleventh grade homecoming together and shared such a fantastic evening. we were in pittsburgh, pa, and if you know anything about the city you know that Mt. Washington gives the best views of the city, most especially at night. so anyways, there are inclines (think sideways-ish elevator car thingie) to get you up the mount and you use a token to pay. he put a five in the machine (six tokens) so we each had roundtrip fare plus one extra. that token is most dear to me. it lives inside this beautiful music box that my pappy brought to my gram from korea when he was in the navy. anyways, the whole shebang went missing during a move and i was in tears. of course it was in the last unmarked box i unpacked. all is well. i know that life would go on without it, but there are some things that you need to see and feel and have there with you.

you should slash his tires...

I know what you mean...I lost my "baby scrap book" (the scrap books my mother had made for me that I had hauled around for years)...I lost them in the fracas w/my ex's parents....I have NO memories of my past at all. I mean I remember stuff but there's no pictures to pass on to my kids. what a dang shame....assholes....again: what is important is to surrround yourself with love. wherever you may find it. I had my kids. Lord knows, I had precious little else but it was me and my kids against the world, and to this day I still remember the nights we'd all lie in the same bed, telling each other stories, bad jokes etc....until we fell asleep. Not much puts me to sleep, but the sound of my kids voices, that always works! Oh! the bad stories! (It was a dark and stormy night....) My kids will never have snotty ways. we came from hard times and we know what it means to struggle. and, in the end, since we had each other, it was ok.

I tell you. when you have kids and you look into their eyes and you know they are counting on you for everything...it means something. You grow up awful fast....

This may sound weird, but.. My combat boots.

I got them when I was 13. They were the first article of clothing that I had that meant something special to me. I was at the beginning of my "rebel" streak, and they gave me an edge. With my pink hair, girly dresses, 40s lipstick, and smeary eyemakeup, they added even more to my look. I freaked the **** out of people, and I liked it. I don't know why, but I did. I wore them everywhere, with everything, all the time. I wore them to the pool, for chrissake. I even wore them to court once.

But, I didn't love them just for style purposes. When I wore them, I felt tough. I felt like no one would give me any bull, and it was true. People left me alone. I guess they boosted my confidence. What was even greater is that they were called my "asskicking boots" by my friends, and they were sooo scuffed up and ratty. They got hiddeous after a while, but I loved them. They had battlescars.

Then, I got placed in a group home for a while. I had them there with me, and when it was decided that I return home, I packed up my belongings, with nothing on my mind BUT getting the hell out of there. I guess I forgot about my combats, too. I called back the next day to see if I could retrieve them, but they had already thrown them out. I was so, so bummed. I know they're just shoes, but they have memories attatched.

They looked like this, by the by:
http://roxyblink.tripod.com/sitebuil...ures/cargo.jpg

Okay, that was my lame contribution.

thanks everyone, for sharing your stories. I guess a lot of us have gone through hard times or lost precious things, but we make it through....
