There's a long discussion of this on the Rumours DVD-Audio commentary track. They play the original version of "Keep Me There" (or a version close to the original) and talk about the evolution of the song.

The funny thing about it is that Stevie says that she at first didn't like John's bass breakdown/solo in the middle. She said when she first heard it, it immediately made her think, "THE MONSTERS ARE COMING!!!"

I'm sure she likes it now. How could she not, after playing it every concert of every Mac tour for almost 30 years...? Not to mention that she even played it solo as a Street Angel tour encore...

I remember Stevie's comments about 'the monsters are coming' but I don't think she said she didn't like it, did she?

My understanding of the song-- it started out as a Chris tune (Keep Me There) and then John was 'mucking about' in the studio and played that cool bassline- and he remembered that Chris said, "oooo! I like that!' so they kept it as part of the song. As time went on they realized the main part of the song wasn't really working, but the bass solo/ending they all really did like. I think this major contribution was what got John the writing credit. Anyway-- LB then played a major role in re-structuring it, and Stevie contributed her lyrics. So hence we have the reason why J,C,L and S are listed as co-writers.

However I have no &$#% idea what Mick did to get a credit. maybe they just felt bad leaving him out LOL.

This is confusing. The instrumental is termed Keep Me There and then the Reissue has Keep Me There (Butter Cookie). Two different songs with the same title. I guess that is possible....

I've heard her Keep Me There on a bootleg and it's very keyboard oriented. and nothing like Butter Cookie

I'm with ya. The only thing I can think of is that whomever did the bootlegs, misprinted it.

when you think about it all the members had a an input on each song, yes lindsey would say how he would like it played but inturn they all came up with there own interpretations on how to play a part adn this was on all songs not just the chain, jsut cause you write the liyrics dosent mean you write the song... all you stevie lovers out there

It seems more likely to me that the mistake was made by David McLees & Gary Peterson on the reissue package. Album sleeves & jackets are notoriously underedited, & often contain misspellings, inaccuracies, wrong factual details, etc.

The members of the band -- mostly Chris & Lindsey -- have always referred to "Keep Me There" as the kernel of "The Chain." So it stands to reason that the unreleased track we have from the "Rumours: The Other Side" bootleg (Track 10), which is also the one used on the DVD-A that Ken Caillat put together, is the *real* "Keep Me There" because it's the one that obviously is "The Chain" -- that's apparent to any musician & even to most anyone who isn't.

"Butter Cookie" on the reissue has nothing to do with "The Chain." Some sort of procedural or logistical error is probably at the root of the use of "Keep Me There" in parens after "Butter Cookie."

The only other explanation I can think of is that Chris threw the "Keep Me There" title around on a couple of songs that she had brewing, so maybe there's an old reel or studio log that McLees saw that had "Butter Cookie" listed as "Keep Me There," too. Studio logs & track sheets also often contain errors: for example, the instrumental track sheet on the DVD-A for "The Chain" lists no Hammond organ, which is a definite mistake.

I wish we had the whole track (Track 10) of "Keep Me There" from the bootleg available in studio sound -- it's scratchy & squeaky on the bootleg (another Maureen special). I can't believe that it wasn't put on the DVD-A in its entirety (was it?) or on the reissue at all.
