Default For the College Students

Just some random questions I wanted to ask everyone who's making his or her way in the world of higher education like me

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student?

What degree are you going for?

What do you plan to do with it?

What's your classification?

How many times have you changed your major?

Do you or have you lived on campus?

Do you prefer that to commuting?

How's your university's cafeteria?

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or
are the classes usually too big for that?

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general?

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student? Graduate student

What degree are you going for? Master of Arts in Communication

What do you plan to do with it? I want to get into higher education administration (student affairs). I plan to get my PhD in a few years....after I've had a little break. I want to do communiation research too, so I need the doctorate for the training and practice.

What's your classification? Graduate

How many times have you changed your major? Once, as an undergrad. I went from broadcast journalism/English to public relations/English.

Do you or have you lived on campus? Live off campus; lived in a dorm for two years as an undergrad

Do you prefer that to commuting? NO!!!

How's your university's cafeteria? Filled with high-calorie food

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or
are the classes usually too big for that? Most of my classes are in the 12-15 student range, but there's been a few that have been around 25. They admitted a particularly large class when I came in. Where I got my undergrad, the class size was around 20.

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general? I prefer college, and it ain't even close.

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student? Undergrad.

What degree are you going for? BS in Nursing

What do you plan to do with it? RN (possibly further education so I can teach)

What's your classification? Senior!

How many times have you changed your major? Once. I was undecided my Freshman year and changed my major to Nursing the second semester. It put me a year behind, but it's all good.

Do you or have you lived on campus? two years on. in the mist of my third year off.

Do you prefer that to commuting? when it's not snowing like a b*tch

How's your university's cafeteria? I haven't ate there in years. I have blocked out past memories of that place.

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or
are the classes usually too big for that? The whole college community is 700 students. We get to know the professors real well....and they know us.

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general? very much so.

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student? Graduate Student

What degree are you going for? PhD in English

What do you plan to do with it? Become a university professor, and publish my brilliant insights

What's your classification? Graduate

How many times have you changed your major? I began my undergrad as a math major, but then quickly realized I loathed it and found my true calling - literary criticism!

Do you or have you lived on campus? I've always been fortunate enough to live off-campus, but close enough to walk. And I DEFINITELY find it preferable to living in the wretched graduate student dorms!

How's your university's cafeteria? Decent. Nothing to write home about. I walk down to hill to Fazoli's, Jimmy John's, or Taco Bell, usually. (I know I just appalled all the health food nuts lol).

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or are the classes usually too big for that? On the graduate level, classes are smaller, and theoretically at least, profs are supposed to treat you as a fellow professional. It will always depend on the prof - some like to keep themselves distant, some will invite the class to their homes. I've been lucky enough to have friendly profs who I have managed not to annoy - yet! lol

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general? College, especially grad school. I'm alllowed to explore my own interests for the most part, and I find the British Renaissance so fascinating that I enjoy classes. Of course, writing papers is never fun - indeed I'm putting off doing one right now and will return to it soon - ugh - but overall it's a wonderful experience.

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student?
*Undergrad

What degree are you going for?
*Right now something in special education but I'm changing that to music therapy asap

What do you plan to do with it?
*I'd like to have a secondary career as a music therapist working with special needs children

What's your classification?
*Freshman

How many times have you changed your major?
*None yet. I'm switching out of an education class next semester so I can take a general ed music class and then hopefully by the end of next semester I'll officially be a music therapy major.

Do you or have you lived on campus?
*Negative

Do you prefer that to commuting?
*I've been in the residence halls on campus and I couldn't handle being around so many people in a small space and the noise. I need space to study. At the same time, you don't get as involved on campus as you could be if you lived there as a commuter and you don't get the independence experience. I like commuting only because I like to drive, but I know I'm missing out.

How's your university's cafeteria?
*Eh. Good salads. I haven't let myself try the ice cream yet. I only eat there when I have a late class or I've skipped a meal.

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or
are the classes usually too big for that?
*The classes are usually around 30 people and everybody pretty much knows each other, professors and students.

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general?
*YES. High school was hell. I don't know how I survived, but after going through that, I swear I can do anything. I was really expecting college to be worse and it involves a lot more discipline and focus than high school did, but not nearly as much busywork. I'm happy.

Maybe I should add another one:

What are the dorms at your university like?

I thought I should ask since it seems that some of you hate the idea of living in the dorms. And Nancy, they have dorms just for graduate students at Purdue? I'd never heard of that. I think that's a great idea because there are so many freshmen in the dorms and so many of them have a completely different mindset than the graduate students. (But I don't mean you, Kortni. I know you're much more diligent than many of the freshmen I encounter). As it is, I'm a senior and I'm pretty annoyed with the many freshmen who are drunk all the time and don't seem to be doing any work. I know being around them would drive some of the grad. students crazy.

At my university, we have mostly nice dorms. There are a couple of buildings that leave something to be desired, but most are nice and relatively new. Either way, I'd prefer living on campus because my house is over an hour away from campus and it's my best option to live in a dorm because I don't have a car of my own yet.

Talking As a former student...

who may return to school yet again (Havent decided for 100%) I will go ahead an answer the questions...

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student?

Undergraduate...Who graduated in 2 years ( Spartan School of Aeronautics...aka Spartan School of Narcotics...And ya people ask me why I dont fly on an airlines, Man if ya seen the people I attended school with, who now work on those airliners ya wouldnt be flying either )

What degree are you going for?

Bachelor's in Applied Science (Q.C./N.D.T.-Gawd I loved nuking s**t!!! I loved the NRC courses!)

What do you plan to do with it?

Be bored...Which I accomplished successfully!!!

What's your classification?

ASNT certified NDT Level 2...Hell I even won ASNT's national scholarship award ( $$$$$$$!!! ) by just writing something down off the top of my head in 3 minutes...Since our 70yr.old instructor Mr.Hackler forgot to tell our NDT class the previous Friday that the essay had to handed in Monday morning at 7:30am right as class started!!!

How many times have you changed your major?

Never did...

Do you or have you lived on campus?

Nope...I had my own place at the ripe ol' age of 20 'cause I worked 40hrs a week and went to school about the same amount of time, And the last thing I wanted was a roommate who would either not be responsible with paying the bills/rent/etc or someone who was annoying that I would probably kill at a later date.

Do you prefer that to commuting?

I sure did...

How's your university's cafeteria?

Don't know...Rarely ate there in the 2 years I went to Tech school (Loved fast food too damn much!!!)

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or are the classes usually too big for that?

My favorite college math teacher Mr.K went out of his way to know everyone by name, Except for me...I was given the name of "Muskogee" because of my hometown. Yeah, I may have been from "Hicksville" (aka Muskogee) but I think I showed all the students up with a 110.0 "A+" average (Your course average + test average=Sub-Total grade average of the course...Add 10% for quizzes/etc at the end of the year...I had a 100 course average & a 100 quiz average before the 10% added, So add the 100 with 10 and I ended up with a 110 average!!! Smoked the kidz from larger cities/high school...Gawd they hated my ass, but screw 'em!!!)

We had about 35 students per class in the Math/Physics/English/Etc. courses and about 10-15 students total for the QC/NDT portion of the course.

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general?

Yeah, College (Tech.School) was fun...I smoked their asses/their courses (3.8 GPA) and all I got was a lousy degree outta it

I'm considering planning on going back to school for "Radiology" (Applied radiation science for medical use) since I can do "Radiography" (Applied radiation science for industrial use...ie-Oil industry) in my sleep...Hell Deb's hospital would hire me in a heartbeat since they can never keep a RT on staff.

undergrad
certification paralegal studies
Work for an environmental law firm
changed my major....lets see, it only took me 12 years to decide on something may have decided sooner if someone else was paying. And if Chico wasn't so fun...
Never lived on Campus, cause i've never gone to a "big girl" campus!
My classes have always been small.
I preferred highschool, because you get to think about a different thing every hour, see your friends, and you can be in drama, choir, sports, and band, all at the same time, which is not the same as college, where you're supposed to concentrate on, basically, one type of thing.
You probably didn't mean for a 30 year old to answer this, but, I am in college

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student?

Undergrad

What degree are you going for?

Political science. I'd like to do a double major (not sure what at this point), or minors in photography or business w/in the entertainment industry.

What do you plan to do with it?

I'm not entirely sure at this point. Law school, if I can find a way to pay for it.

What's your classification?

Sophomore

How many times have you changed your major?

3

Do you or have you lived on campus?

I lived on-campus my freshman year. This year I have an apartment a few blocks from school.

Do you prefer that to commuting?

I don't have a car, so yes. I like to be able to roll out of bed 20 minutes before class, too .

How's your university's cafeteria?

I actually can't complain too much. We have a main "homestyle" cafeteria, another big restaurant on the other end of campus, a commons building with places for Chinese, Mexican, Italian, southern food, etc, and then a couple fast food places & a coffee shop type thing.

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or are the classes usually too big for that?

Both, really. I've had a few large lectures (100-200 students), and some really small classes (10-15), but most have been in the middle. Even in the big lecture halls it's not that difficult to get to know your professors if you want to make the effort, though.

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general?

God, yes. I HATED high school.

What are the dorms at your university like?

It's mixed... just depends where you are. My first year I lived in a brand new building with 3 rooms and 2 (big) bathrooms to a suite, an international gourmet restaurant downstairs, and maid service every other day. My friends in another building, however, had no air conditioning, really old furniture, and a chronic roach problem. Yikes.

Yes, they have a graduate student dorm, but it is horrible. My friend Sarah stayed in it for a semester. It was smelly and noisy and old and dark. I've also seen some of my student's dorms. Some don't have air conditioning and the rooms are SOOO small! Also, there are only like two bathrooms to a floor. That alone would make me seek out an apartment. But maybe I'm just spoiled. Regardless, I'm VERY happy to be living off-campus!

Are you an undergraduate or graduate student?
***Undergrad

What degree are you going for?
***a BA in political science (minor in French)

What do you plan to do with it?
***Not really sure at this point. Ideally, I would like to join the Peace Corps right after graduation. Then graduate school. Either law school or a Masters in public policy.

What's your classification?
***Sophomore

How many times have you changed your major?
***None really. I originally wanted to double major in poli sci and English, but decided to just go with poli sci.

Do you or have you lived on campus?
***I do. Denison is a 4-year residential college.

Do you prefer that to commuting?
***Absolutely.

How's your university's cafeteria?
***Eh...mostly sucks.

Do you generally have professors who try to get to know their students, or
are the classes usually too big for that?
***Definitely great relationships between faculty and students. The largest class I've had was 40 students.

Do you prefer college to high school and grade school in general?
***Absolutely. I think I grew so much in just my first year at school. Wouldn't change a thing. Love it here. I'm looking into staying on campus for the summer, actually.

I'm at UK, and they have apartments for grad students. They're very small, though definitely liveable, but they are more expensive than many of the off-campus apartments. Many of them are so far away from your buildings, that you couldn't walk. (And then your parking permit is for the complex, so you're riding the bus.) So it is too much of a hassle for me.

The dorms where I got my undergrad were ok. I lived in the halls with the "community baths" as opposed to suites. It wasn't bad....at least you knew the bathrooms were cleaned every day. What I hated were the rules....you had to be out by a certain day for all the holiday breaks, etc. Plus, there was a dorm fire my freshman year that killed one student. I was happy after my sophomore year, when they let you "officially" move off campus.
