Jason always felt he was an outsider more than he felt he was an equal member in Metallica (Hopefully Rob won't suffer the same fate)....But having no outlet for his material he finally reached a point where it was either stay in the band make $$$ and be miserable or leave the band and the subsequent $$$$ and have the artistic freedom to finally release his material.
All one has to do is look at Voi-Vod's newest release (And song writing credits) since Jason came aboard to see he is happy with his decision http://www.voivod.com

ps-It wouldve been interesting to see a Mustaine/Newsted pairing though...But it remains to be seen how much Dave has recovered from his hand injury (According to his latest interview his hand has recovered greatly.)

Good for Jason. I hope his new project is making him happy. Sounds like James and Lars (especially) had a lot of ***** to work out, I hope they're successful in their therapy.
The Dave Mustaine confrontation in the vid-biography sounds really interesting...I can't believe he's had so much pent up rage for the last 20 odd years that he was never able to dispell. Even with the success of Megadeth he hasn't been able to let go of past resentments directed at Lars and James. I hope the confrontation made it possible for him to finally begin closure with Metallica.
