But I would respectfully disagree, in turn, with your statement that rock's foundation is guitar solos. I'd say its foundation is simple, three-chord progressions and solid rhythm. All the other stuff (guitar solos, more interesting progressions) came along later in the game. But that's kinda beside the point.

Ahhh...but I say "rock"...not "rock & roll"...two animals, similar "DNA".

Yes...yes..."Rock & Roll"...now there's your "three-chord progression and solid rhythm" (to quote Muddy Waters, "The Blues had a baby and they called it Rock & Roll").
Buddy Holly
Elvis
Eddie Cochrane
Carl Perkins
Chuck Berry, etc

..."ROCK" is fueled by high octane extended guitar pyrotechnics.
Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll", "The Song Remain's The Same", etc
Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird"
Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love"...any of their live recordings
Black Sabbath "Paranoid"
The Who "My Generation", "Won't Get Fooled Again", etc
