Wink The Gypsy shoot

I know we have all seen the behind the scenes of the Gypsy shoot before. Recently there was an article or video posted that Stevie was in rehab post Mirage recording and had to leave rehab because the shoot could not be rescheduled. Stevie begged for cocaine and someone snuck in a big glass tube of cocaine. However someone accidently or purposely threw it away. In this interview Stevie has major cocaine sways. She keeps swaying back and forth in this interview. You can see she is a fish out of water. She was a spoiled rock star that slept until 4pm every day and stayed up and partied all night. She says she needed to get up at 3:30am to get to the shoot on time. BTW please comment if you really believe Stevie did an exercycle at 4am before going to the shoot (like she says). Stevie recently commented that you can see Lindsey's distain for her in the Gypsy scene when they were dancing. You can see the torture the band went through for this video. Even though it was the second single it was the first video recorded. No wonder the band could not even be filmed together for Hold Me.
In part 2 Stevie admits she looks like an idiot and cannot memorize anything. She keeps grabbing the collar of her jacket in the beginning because she cannot do the cocaine sways since she is sitting. Girl got a hold of some good stuff.

Was she? I always thought her first rehab was before Tango, 1987.

Just by watching the video, I can't say it was torture for Lindsey or the entire band. I always see Gypsy as a nostalgia song, not a song about happiness where everyone should be smiling. I've seen plenty of videos of sad or nostalgic songs where the bands or singers look serious, sad, or simply doesn't smile. I didn't get the impression that they were being tortured in the Gypsy video, I repeat, while watching the video in 1982. I loved and still love the video. And the song.

Of course, knowing everything we know now, my perception changes. But even so, I wouldn't call it "torture", and don't think that was why he appeared like that in the scene. Anyway I'd like to know how they agreed to film those scenes. I guess the general concept was Stevie idea since Mick wrote it was her "fantasy world". And it's obvious that if she wanted a '40s dance scene with someone, people would much prefer it to be Lindsey rather than Mick or John. But if Lindsey felt it would be a "torture" to dance with her, he could have said No. Torture is when you are forced to do someting. But he was 33, a grown man, a millionaire, had another manager, he could negotiate his terms effectively. I find it hard to believe they would force him, especially someone with his strong personality. And if he agreed to do it, he shouldn't complain later. After all, he must have made a good revenue from that album.

It was revealed many years ago here during the Hold Me behind the scenes segments were released that it was revealed Stevie went to rehab before the Mirage tour. It was private and not many knew about it. In another recent article or video here it was also discussed the Gypsy shoot with everything ready to go could not be rescheduled and she abandoned ship and went to the video shoot. Stevie said Lindey was not acting with stone face. He did not want to be with her. Yes it was torture for them. No one tells them what to do or what time to get up. This is why they hated the process and explains why no video was made for Love In Store. The tight schedules, the make up, the constant retakes. Stevie said it was brutal and like making a movie. Stevie was begging for cocaine during the Gypsy shoot. It was just posted here several months ago in someone's book or something and someone smuggled it in but it mysteriously disappeared.

This is NOT in the book but it is cut and paste from wikipedia

The video for the song, directed by Russell Mulcahy, was the highest-budget music video ever produced at the time.[20] The video locations included a highly detailed portrayal of a forest and required many costumes and dancers. It was the very first "World Premiere Video" on MTV in 1982.[citation needed]

Interpersonal strife amongst the band members complicated the shoot, much as they had with the earlier video for "Hold Me". When he was pairing them during blocking, Mulcahy recalls, "people were pulling me aside saying, 'No, no. Those two were ****ing and then they split up and now he's sleeping with her.' I got very confused, who was sleeping with whom."[21]

Nicks especially remembers the experience as unpleasant. Two weeks before the shoot, she had gone into drug rehabilitation to try to overcome her cocaine addiction. However, the video shoot could not be rescheduled, and she had to take a break for it. Near the end of the first of three days of the shoot, Nicks was exhausted and said she needed cocaine. A small bottle was discreetly given to her, though it was thrown out before she could use any. Nicks later said, "I think we would probably have gone on to make many more great videos like 'Gypsy' had we not been so into drugs."[21]

I don't really see anything i'd call torture... not everybody loves dancing lol, maybe LB was just a little stiff. and maybe dancing so close to stevie was a little uncomfortable.

I'd be curious if the director knew the background of the band.. like in terms of exes. Or did they just say, 'oh these two people might look good together dancing' or 'These two would look nice at the table having a drink' and it turned out to be the exes who were matched, just because they looked like 'they could be a couple.' like for example i couldn't imagine anyone suggesting john to be dancing w stevie lol

Can't say J&C looked too bothered at the table sipping drinks together all day, either!

Since I used the word torture let me explain.
Putting entitled rock stars that want to drink and party all day into tightly scheduled routines that last all day with costume changes, etc. It must of been torture
You know they hated to be told over and over again to do it another time.

I'm curious too if the director knew the background and who wrote the scenes in detail, since of all the Fleetwood Mac films in which the members star, Gypsy is the one that seems most like it tells a story, or a collage of stories. I want to think they participated in some level, not necessarily creating but at least agreeing with the scenes.

Again, being already rock stars I want to think they had more decision power to accept and reject things. Proof of this is that they only did an 8-week tour; they didn't want any more time (well, except Mick).

That said, I must admit that I don't understand why they agreed to film Hold Me in a desert where they were sweltering in the heat. THAT must have been physical torture. Definitely worse than dancing with Stevie.

The record companies in 1982 insisted on music videos. Gypsy was the first MTV World Premier Video. It was a great way to promote the album. These rock stars of the 1970s hated making videos. Chris of course made a mockery of music videos with Love Will Show Us How. Stevie had no say on the Civil War Stand Back video. She has said she hated how someone was shot in the video. In the end she did reject it but it cost more money coming out of her pocket.
The concept pushed by the Hold Me creator played off the album title Mirage. Where is a mirage seen but a dessert of course.
Just imagine all this tension was BEFORE they hit the road so just imagine how it was on the road.

But, but, but... Lindsey said "we are here to show you that… we just refuse to go away!"
