That majorly impacted Stevie and Jimmy's romantic relationship by all accounts. I want to know did that essentially break them up? did he never come back to the chateau? Did he ever spend time on that tour with her? Or was it so f***ed up from that he stayed away? I would have strong sympathy for Stevie in that situation if your ex behaves so badly that it breaks up your present relationship, while he continued to drag *his* new girlfriend around with the band everywhere for years.....
It is an interesting piece of history. Anytime an ex is with an ex who brings their new significant other is a tense time. Stevie and Lindsey never got over their relationship. Being that Jimmy was not just her boyfriend but producer who made her a solo star with a #1 album was probably too much for him to take. Also I can see Lindsey being annoyed like "why did you bring him here, we dont need a producer."

That's very true. I thought I had heard (from Ken, maybe?) that there were not supposed to be any peripherals around during the time at the chateau..that was part of the point of going there, to get everyone away from family, partners, distractions etc and just be around each other. which is the impression i get from chris's description...but I wonder if lindsey was upset that Jimmy-- sort of an 'outsider'--was there, when nobody else had any partners with them?

This is what I would think too. Bringing Jimmy is a way to annoy Lindsey and rub her successful solo album in his face. I can get why Stevie would do it and also get why it would infuriate Lindsey. But it’s par for the course with this toxic duo.

My take is that Lindsey suspected that Jimmy would try to produce the album or at least Stevie's tracks. There's a Tom Petty interview where he says that Jimmy was only suppose to be the engineer on Damn The Torpedoes but horded his way into being producer. There were a lot of power plays going on in and out of the group at this time.

We do get 2 excellent Stevie songs written during this time: Straight Back and Sable On Blonde (going to France and breaking up with Jimmy). Stevie's life was moving at record speed. Off the Tusk tour she went into the studio for Bella Donna. Once completed, she jet setted back and forth from France and went on tour with Petty flying in for shows around the country. Once his tour finished, she went into rehearsal for her short tour. Then she went back to France to finish Mirage. Came back to the states to make 2 long videos and hit the road with the Mac. Then she went into recording Wild Heart and went on a drug binge tour with Joe. No wonder she was a drug crazed rock star. Just imagine that busy and crazy schedule while everything you touch turns to gold. Bella Donna and Mirage both went to #1 and now they were also video stars.
Too bad there was not a documentary about the making of Mirage. I would enjoy it more than the Tusk one. It was the end of an era for the band and I love every tiny detail about it.
