As rough as Stevie's singing is on "Juliet" and "Ooh My Love" the passion and warmth in her voice are still evident. I can see why neither song was chosen for TITN (they don't fit with the other material--or they fit even less than the ones that were chosen). But at least on these demos I can hear the old Stevie. On "When I See You Again" and "Welcome..." she sounds disengaged, distant, even tranquilized. I never understood why the band didn't try to record "Planets of the Universe" and "Smile at You" during these sessions. They'd tried both songs before and presumably that familiarity could have been used to their advantage.

On another note, I wish the version of "You and I Part 2" with Christine on lead vocals was included. Her performance of the song is so much more convincing than Lindsey's. I also wish the demo of "Everywhere" was included.

My overall reaction is that a number of these songs sound like FM under all the synths and drum machines. I wish more of them got a chance to stand naked.

I really don't get the love for Stevie's voice on Juliet or Ooh My Love.

She sounds a mess. Better on Juliet I supposed than Ooh My Love but she's very monotonic on both.....not her best. Interesting? Sure. Good? Not really.

Special Kind of Love with more fleshed out lyrics could have replaced Family Man even though I love the acoustic guitar on FM. Ricky is just too spare... there are no real lyrics. Where We Belong had a lot of potential.
Mystified remains a total snooze......

Who needs 4 extended versions of Family Man??

Glad LB got rid of the overly tweaked squeaky vocals on Tango demo in favor of more of his "real" voice.

I think I'd have preferred the Tango In The Night version Richard Dashut unearthed a while back. That was a much earlier and more interesting version as it was so different to the final cut. This version is pretty much the same music but with crappier lyrics and silly voices...a bit annoying.

I love Mystified but the alternate does nothing for me. It sounds kind of eerie and slowly chugs along (but in a weird way).

Ooh My Love- perhaps should have replaced When I See You Again (but not with this vocal).

But wouldn't Planets of the Universe or Smile at You have been even more out of place on Tango in the Night? I really can't imagine them with all that 80s pop sinth. Maybe If You Were My Love but even that is a bit of a stretch.

LB's production of Smile at You on SYW and the Chris Lord Algae(sp?)'s production of Planets on TISL seem very Tango-friendly. I think with a touch of imagination, these could have fit in nicely. Alas, my fantasy is only that and we're left with what we've got: two outright clunkers.

Yes, it's Chris Lord-Alge. I don't know, Planets of the Universe from the Rumours sessions and Smile at You from the Mirage sessions are among my absolute favourites and I can't see them in every other way. Also since I've read that When I See You Again was chosen for Tango in the place of What has rock and roll ever done for you I just always thought that that and Joan of Arc would have been much better choices.

The standouts for me are the instrumental demo of Mystified and the Full versions of You and I. With the original Album clocking in at 44 minutes, I wonder if they had to choose between Part 1 or Part 2 due to time constraint of the vinyl (in lieu of the full version) - a la Silver Springs.

I think Juliet should have been wonderful as part of Stevie's solo albums. Maybe it's in one of them and I didn't know it. I don't follow Stevie's solo career that much.

I'd probably have included Ooh my love, but then I don't know what song I'd have cut.

I love Ricky, but I loved it since I found the vinyl.

Where we belong and Book of Miracles have that Mirage vibe, if you know what I mean. They sound more 1982 than 1987.

The extended remix of Big Love. Fantastic. Those "big, big love" at the end from Stevie make the song even better.

Four versions of Family Man is way too much, but if I have to choose one, maybe the Extended Guitar Version is my favorite, just because of all those Stevie's "sister, sister" at the end.

Rupert Hine really worked some magic on Ooh My Love. The Tango version is a complete mess!

I wont allow any TOSOTM bashing on this board . Its a purely magical album that has incredible writing on most of the songs. Her vocals were so strong and she re-discovered her voice again. Its classic Stevie and probably her last solo album before her voice started to change for the worse.

It's a horrible album full of terrible vocals. She ruined Cry Wolf with her awful vocals. After I listened to that album, I threw it in the trash. I also noticed that tons of people were returning it and it dominated the resale bins. It may be the album that hurt her most. People bought it and then realized it was awful. The only reason it is platinum is because of The Dance. It's terrible album with lazy lyrics and vocals. The production is also all wrong.

I thought the exact same thing. I think that a different take may have been used. Because the intro is like twenty seconds longer, and certain vocal parts sound different.

Yes I think it is and I posted the same thing earlier. Someone posted an article where Richard Dashut was saying LIndsey was speeding up and slowing down a lot of the songs. This must be a slightly different version sped up. I prefer it a little slower but love the two together. Should have both made the album with Where we belong and Ricky. If any album screamed for a double album, this one was it. So many good songs left off, minus Stevies. Sorry but she was a mess on during this record and it shows. This should have absolutely been a Buckingham Mc vie record since Stevie (once again) barely participated.

People think I'm a complete Stevie hater, which isn't true.

Bella Donna is a god damned MASTERPIECE. I love that album, and if I could only pick 20 albums to listen to for the rest of my life, BD would make the cut!

Wild Heart was damned good, but not quite as good as BD.

Rock a Little...ugh, Mama was starting to slip. It was still passable, but barely.

OSOTM - sheer and utter GARBAGE. I tried to make myself like it, for MONTHS, and just couldn't. It's horrible! Mama had lost her gift, and my fandom was over. Other than a Dance blip, these is no Stevie to me after 83-84. She is dead to me.
