Really don't get the Warm way and Mystified hate. As a musician i am blown away by the beautiful melody, harmonies and amazingly melodic guitar solo in Mystified. The song evokes such a feeling of tropical sensuality to me. Warm ways is great too.

If anyone is yet to hear it RD posted an interesting early cut of Mystified.
All the instrumentation is a lot more disparate (if that's the right word) than on the final version. I'm glad it was developed a lot further.

These are exquisite songs. Her singing on both of them is inspired, particularly on "Warm Ways," which is a bit of an aberration for Christine: it is written in E-flat, one of the only songs with a "black" root note. As Christine has said, she is comfortable playing in any key as long as the root note is a "white" note--the ivory key over the ebony ones. As a player of the keys myself, I completely sympathize with her comment. Playing in a sharp or flat key can be a bit more difficult on the fingers. Still, one of the reasons "Warm Ways" sounds different and fresh is because it revels in a musical texture she doesn't normally explore.

Which is why I also believe Lindsey would play with the tape speeds, especially on his songs. Even lowering it a quarter of a step gives it a different sound.

That said, growing up learning guitar and keyboards by playing along, I HATED him for it. For guitar, you had to retune for every *&^%ing song, and on keys(unless it was something you could manually change the pitch), you were screwed!

Back to WW, it's never been a favorite of mine. The production sounds horribly dated, with all those tom fills.

Yes, regarding Lindsey's production choices. He liked to speed up the tape, and the effect is especially noticeable some of Christine's songs. As good as it is, Isn't it Midnight would have been far better if he'd stayed true to the original key.

I don't think of WW as dated. Yeah, those tom fills might be a bit of a tell that it's the early-to-mid seventies. (Think SHOW ME A SMILE.) But to my ears the production on it is pretty clean and crisp. And her voice is just gorgeous. Weird choice for a first single, though.
