Glenn Frey passes away

I don't know all of their work but some songs I still like very much. Especially those cowritten by Frey. My 15 year old of course is always playing Hotel California on his guitar.

I cannot believe some of the negative articles being written about the band while there are glowing tributes to Bowie. I'm a big Bowie fan but there were artistic mistakes he made in his career, songs and albums that badly misfired. Every long term artist has those moments.

Many grunge music artists however were closet fans of Bowie and Fleetwood Mac. I believe that helped them survive the 90s cultural shifts. Have to admit that's how I probably became aware if them, because I missed their first phase.

i had to laugh at your use of the word closet. you mean Nirvana covering in 1993, at the top of their fame and influence, a 1970 Bowie song is defined as a "closet fan"?

even Trent Reznor grew up on Bowie. (not grunge but 90s, and recorded and toured with Bowie towards the end of 90s, which of course most NIN fans didn't exactly appreciate. )

and then of course, Pumpkins and Hole covers of FM songs.

about the Eagles, i think i read that in some article somewhere recently, how grunge / 90s rockers kinda brought back FM (well and there was Bill Clinton!) from the laughing stock they became at the end of the 80s (I'd rather jack and all that) but that renewed appreciation never happened in that way for the Eagles.

Though it probably wasn't cool at first, I think over time it became more acceptable to like FM or Bowie. Courtney Love, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers - big fans of Fleetwood Mac.

I remember that godawful song 'I'd Rather Jack (than Fleetwood Mac)'. Was there ever anything worse than Stock Aitken and Waterman? But it seemed like most of the top ten were songs by them at one point - in Australia anyway. There's a lot of nostalgia about the 80s now, but not all of it was that good. I was in my teens but listening to a lot of 60s and 70s music instead.

Of course Stevie was around in the 80s but going through her Klonopin phase. After Bowie and Jagger did 'Dancing In The Streets' - well it seemed like it couldn't get any worse. But let's face it if you have a career for 30-40 years, you're not always going to get it right.

I should have been more of a grunge fan but wasn't really, except for that which was more tuneful and melodic. I will listen to any genre if it has a good melody and lyrics. Doesn't matter if it's Frank Sinatra or Black Sabbath. But if I had to pick a specific era I would still say 1970s were the best.
