I sat Christine, Lindsey, and Mick down (well because John walks away when I speak) and I explained to them in detail what I wanted to give to them. Because they are in my band and they are my first priority. Being in Fleetwood Mac is like being in the army. Well, if the army had private jets and private hotels with grand pianos and a trail of assistants following you around, and if there wasn't any bombs or guns or killing. Yes, just like the army.

And I told them they are my first love and I told them how they are my first love cuz you know they already know that. And I told Lindsey I joined this band and we dated for ya know like 5% of the time that we've known each other, so we have to get along. And we need to do this, because Lindsey and I are so special. This may be our final project in Fleetwood Mac so it has to be good. I told all of them that.

When I looked up, for some reason Christine was hanging by a rope from the ceiling, Lindsey had jammed two sharp objects into his ears, and Mick was laying on the floor next to an empty bottle of pills. So I grabbed my little assistants and we pranced into my army like hotel and I played Rhiannon again. Because you know, it's the only song I really know how to play.. hahahahahah...

This is so hilarious. And poor John. I've said that about him during the show, that Stevie is free to walk up and say anything she wants to him and he can't move. He's captive up there. It's like being a hostage in the army.

Like you, I've read 1000's of interviews from the Macsters.

It took us 10 years to realize we were correct about Buck being mad that Christine left. As it came full circle, we now understood his frustration.

I never would have guessed that he and Stevie would not have more of a collaboration in Christine's absence. That one threw me.

I think that they all think both Lindsey and Stevie are loons, but in different ways. Since Lindsey is insane musically, sometimes it actually helps them to communicate with him. Other times, it is frustrating for them, when he is focusing on one thing too long and they are ready to move on.

They can't relate to her musically and count on Lindsey to do that. This is my perception, too. I think Christine understands Lindsey better than Mick because they co-write and she just reels him in when she needs to.

I've seen both Christine, Mick and Lindsey all roll their eyes at Stevie. I've never seen someone talk about themselves more than she does.

well the story told by Tom Petty in the recent RS article was rather revealing-- Christine came to him and asked him to ask Stevie to make some musical change to a song because they felt he knew her better than they did. (I'm starting to really like Tom as a credible commentator on the relationships in this band lol)

In any event, the thought occurs that both Lindsey and Chris have spent extended time away from being in the band... and certainly for Chris, being out of the 'biz' altogether for long stretches. Even Lindsey bugged out for a bit. So they each have a point of reference to life that isn't all work, all fame, all music. Stevie has never done this. Her career was a bit flat in the 90s and she was zonked out on klonopin but then she wasn't really in position to be 'living' life in quite the same way. So her whole world is built on career, career, career.

I also remember she said in an interview that Don Henley "taught" her how to be a rock star. She didn't elaborate in detail, but I've always thought this to be a bad thing. The Eagles are...well, the Eagles, with all the narcissism and jerk off rock star attitude and behavior that goes with. Not terribly long after her time with him/them she'd make comments like the infamous "we're rock stars, we're not nice" etc. It always felt like Stevie, who craves to be liked, to be popular and all that (result of her transient childhood, always having to make new friends? who knows. Lindsey seems to think so ) took this kind of 'mentoring' to heart and embraced it. I think she can be nice, thoughtful, and down to earth when she wants to be, or when it suits her purposes, but I also think she really means it/believes it when she says "I'm a ROCK STAR" and I think that's when the British 'taking the mickey' must be required in order to get things done within the band.

Stevie talks about the Eagles here in a 1981 interview with Mary Turner :

"Let’s put it this way, I wasn’t the 9 year resident rock and roll star. I was new, but I had a job, I worked. Fleetwood Mac was happening. I had been singing along to the Eagles for five, ten years and then to finally actually meet all of them. I was very aware of what kind of guys they were, what they liked and what they didn’t like, who they accepted and who they didn’t accept. And I thought they were all roguish. And when I was with them I didn’t say anything about Fleetwood Mac ever. I just didn’t talk about it because it was easier if I was going to be around them to not talk about what I did because they weren’t really interested.”


"It says in the Highwayman, ‘she considers slowing down,’ but then he would never win. She purposely lets him win because it’s easier to let him win. She gets a lot further if she just lets him win. And I learned that a long time ago if I was going to be accepted as anything, as a songwriter, as a person, as anything, that I would have to be very quiet, unaggressive around them, feminine and trick them to death. And it worked. See I love them and I respect them so much, and they are, as far as I’m concerned the greatest songwriters and all I ever wanted from them was a pat on the back saying ‘not bad Stevie.' I didn’t want roses, flowers and accolades. I just wanted a word, which when Don came and sang on this album was probably the greatest compliment anyone has ever gave me because he would have never sang on that album if he didn’t think it was good.

When I was searching I found this 1994 quote from Details Magazine and it is very much where the band is today. I guess Stevie thinks they had better shut up about 24K and her solo career or else she definitely won't participate in a new album. She's keeping them treading water.

Yeah, and if the book were to come out, a lot of people would cease to think of me as this eccentric, flaky girl. My journals tell the real story of what went on, like the way things changed after Bella Donna came out. No one in the band ever said a word to me about my solo career. They were keeping quiet for their own best interests. They knew if they ripped Bella Donna apart, I wouldn't give them any more songs. Remember, "Dreams', which is just me, is the only gold single that Fleetwood Mac ever had.

I think Stevie's fans have the impression that the band discounts her because they don't appreciate her talent. I believe they do. If they kind of give her the "brush off, little sister" treatment, I think it's because they find her silly. It's not because they don't think she's a good singer, songwriter and entertainer. Even on the first album with Rhiannon, Landslide and John liking Crystal, I think they thought she was valuable. When Mick told her she was instrumental on Over My Head, I don't think he was flattering her, I think they all realized what she added to that song.

So, I don't buy that they ever underestimated her contributions to the band. They just maybe find her tedious.

She once said,

I am funny. I crack up my band constantly. I could have been a comedian if I'd really wanted to. In Fleetwood Mac, I was pretty much told to be quiet at all times. I was so intimidated because I felt like nobody wanted me to be in the band and that they only wanted Lindsey, and me along for the ride.

I mean, this makes it seem like they just wanted her to be quiet because they thought of her as a child, but maybe they wanted her to be quiet because she was probably giggling, dancing, squealing and telling them about the 3 hours she spent taking selfies the night before, getting the lighting just right and placing candles all around the bathroom until they just couldn't take it anymore.

So you have giddy Stevie and Lindsey spending hours trying to make his guitar sound like a violin and no wonder the other 3 became big time alcoholics.
