Which Demos Will Make the Cut for the New Solo Record?

I've listened to a lot of Stevie outtakes but had never heard "24 Karat Gold" until just recently. If I had to pick a list from what I've heard, I'm not sure that one would be on there. But I'm optimistic about this project.

"Secret Love" turned out nicely last time around. And my favorite songs on TISL were "Planets of the Universe," "Sorcerer" and "Candlebright" (songs from the '70s, arguably her most-inspired period of songwriting).

I'd love a bluesy take on "The Dealer," similar to the Tusk outtake.

It's a shame that more of her songs didn't get proper studio treatment in the '70s when her voice was at its peak (75-77). Instead we got 5 FB songs with her on lead and Lindsey crowding her out of her own "Crystal" and "I Don't Want to Know." Therefore, I was thrilled to get the high-quality demos of "Planets," "Think About It," "The Chain" (which I may like better than the transformed group effort). Hell, sometimes I even listen to "Whenever I Call You Friend" just to hear her soar.

But Stevie, bless her heart, has usually known how to work her ever-evolving voice to her advantage, apart from the Klonopin, could-care-less years. Plus, David did such a nice job helming IYD. So I'm excited about this album!

I just hope Stevie didn't get confused revisiting her coke years on YouTube and think "All Over You" was really her -- or Prince. Cuz it's not

I'd say her voice peaked after Tusk, Beautiful Child may just be the most stunning vocal of her career. I agree that it's a shame there's not more songs with her early voice though. It's part of what makes some of these demos so precious.

I don't particularly think she soars on that song, but when I first heard these on the radio, I do distinctly remember loving both Magnet and Steel and Whenever I Call You Friend precisely because of the female vocal and I didn't even know it was Stevie back then. I may have heard the name "Stevie Nicks" but I didn't associate it with a particular person. And I didn't even know it was the same person on Magnet and Steel and Friend. I just knew that I couldn't wait to get to the woman's part when I listened to those songs. Michele

She once referred to Kenny Loggins in an interview (only half-jokingly) as "Kenny 'slave driver' Loggins" saying that he knew exactly what he wanted from her on that song and "he got it. And my hat is off to him because I'm not that easy to work with when people start telling me what to do". Can you spell Lindsey?? Which is why she loves Dave but sometimes one can be too close to one's own work and need that objective outside editor/director (Kenny, Lindsey, Jimmy, etc) to shape an even better performance. It's why I'm excited and yet a little nervous about this new album.

Midnight Wind is her best vocal. With that said, I love her strong voice on Have No Heart.

Yes, it is an amazing vocal but don't over look her stunning work on Walter Egan's first two records, especially Fundamental Roll, she's all over it. If only Fleetwood Mac had let her cut loose (well she did but it got pushed back in the final mixes, ie Oh Daddy) Where's the party? Indeed. Whoever got those vocals out of her should have locked her in a studio and told her to record all the amazing songs she had in her vault.

Regarding the song "all over you" I never bought the fact that it was Prince from the start, If you ask me, I always thought it sounded like Tom Petty singing with stevie

I hate the bluesy Dealer and much prefer the Bella Donna rock version.

I agree with you on Whenever I Call You Friend - that's one of her best vocals ever.

I believe someone on this board confirmed that All Over You was indeed Stevie as she almost put this on Enchanted.

I'm going to need to hear it straight from Stevie to believe it.

I'm a HUGE Prince fan and own a book that exhaustively documents every recording session he made in the 1980s (citing the logs of his engineers with dates/times). And there is no mention of this session ever existing.

Not to mention the fact that the voices sound nothing like Stevie or Prince. You can listen to it again and ask yourself, "What era of Stevie's voice could that possibly be?" It's surely way too high for her 80s/90s voice, and way too flat/different than her 70s voice (when she hadn't even met Prince yet). The male voice definitely is not the Purple One. Sounds like a white dude.

Whoever recorded this half-baked "funk" would be lucky to gig at a Holiday Inn in Omaha. Very amateurish. My guess is that whoever it was decided they could finally get some attention if they mislabeled it online as Stevie & Prince. And if that's the case, boy, they've succeeded in fooling a lot of people.

Maybe it's the romantic notion that Stevie & Prince continued to collaborate that allows people's ears to be fooled by this. She said not long ago that he did offer her the opportunity to write lyrics to his "Purple Rain" demo, but she passed.

"All Over You" does succeed 0ne level: It makes me want to Stand the Hell Back.

All Over You sounds like some crazy night Stevie and Prince spent together, drugged out, playing around in a studio. I can't imagine that Stevie ever considered releasing it on one of her album. But then again, the question still remains if it's even them.

This is a really good early demo that could make the album. Again, very Cat Stevens and has a late 60s vibe.

Does anyone thing Cathouse Blues might make it? It's one of my favorite vocals of Stevie's. I assume it's an old song and not hers.

General belief that it's an original -- she wrote it. Lyrically, it's right in her pocket/style.

It's a quirky little ditty of a song, but it doesn't seem substantial enough/style-wise to be revived as a album track. At the very least, it could pop up as a hidden bonus track...five minutes after the CD album end.
