Really? I haven't heard the earlier versions of "Thrown Down" (although I would love to, if anyone can help) -- but it's by far my favorite track on Say You Will, largely BECAUSE of the production.

I really like "Thrown Down", probably my favorite Stevie contribution on SYW.

Looking forward to what this new Mac album will sound like with Christine's vocals.

As far as last years EP my favorites were Sad Angel and Miss Fantasy, both songs have that classic MAC sound IMO.

In total agreement! Stevies TISL version is pure ear candy. She cut off her nose by trimming off the obvious 1st single & best track from her solo comeback, only for it to become completely ignored by the band on the SYW release!! Talk about missed opportunity. That one was huge!

I do like the Thrown Down on SYW but wall of sound is far superior and in the "killer tune" category. I seriously think it would have climbed the charts and should've been released at least 2 months ahead of the album. Hate to say it but our girl has made some poor song and production choices ever since coming off the Wild Heart tour.

I like all three versions actually, but I agree that I think Wall of Sound had the potential to be a BIG hit lead-up single for SYW.

I'm pretty torn between the SYW and Wall of Sound versions. I love both. I think if the TISL version had the new, second verse ("I've shaken your faith in me, no...") it would be perfect. I love the lyrics to that verse.

I prefer Lindsey's vocal on the Wall of the Sound version. The line "about just how much he never really told her" is so passionate and committed. It's incredible. I think the song would have made a bigger impact on TISL, if it had been placed right after Planets of the Universe.

A little bit of over-reaction, Louie?

I think the version ON SYW fits the overall sound of the ALBUM better, but the TISL outtake version would've made a GREAT pre-album release single and had "radio airplay" written all over it. No crime in having two separate versions of the song...allows for "bonus tracks" when they release "Deluxe Edition" versions of the album 20 years down the road.

I made an iPod playlist of TISL adding "Thrown Down" as well, except I 86'd "Too Far From Texas" instead.

I don't mind "Every Day." It's just kind of lightweight. I'd put it in the same category as "Cry Wolf" and "Docklands."

I wasn't a fan of the SYW version of "Thrown Down" at first, but it's grown on me. It would be interesting to see this song incorporated into the Fleetwood Mac set now that Christine's back. It's very Fleetwood Mac to me.

Agreed. I like both versions; they each have different strengths and weaknesses, but both work well overall. There is no question in my mind that either incarnation is superior to the title track which they chose to release as the single. Heck, "Thrown Down" would have made a better album title, too. I think its implications of physicality would have intrigued people. Certainly the phrase is more intense and forceful than the pleading "Say You Will."

Too bad nobody asked me for suggestions.

Yes. What a missed opportunity. And use supine images on the album cover like we have, but maybe not have them look quite so tranquil lying there. Hint at something tumultuous.

I guess back then they did not know how well they'd be accepted after Christine, so they were trying to let everyone know that they still had what Christine offers. Bad approach.

I've never heard the non album version. someone mentioned it's on a TISL disc with 16 tracks but I've been unable to locate that. Was it released?

Here is the TISL outtake of Thrown Down, also known as the 'wall of sound' version, used in some terrible soap-opera clip compilation. If you don't know, 'wall of sound' refers to a production technique originated by Phil Spector.

From wikipedia:

Spector created a dense, layered, reverberant sound that came across well on AM radio and jukeboxes popular in the era. He created this sound by having a number of electric and acoustic guitarists perform the same parts in unison, adding musical arrangements for large groups of musicians up to the size of orchestras, then recording the sound using an echo chamber.

It has so much energy, it rocks, it pulses, it's exciting - whereas the SYW version sounds like Stevie got reprimanded before recording the vocal.
