Me too. Although that earlier version has something the SYWversion lacks and vice versa. But it is bull to state that he ruïned the song, in my world.

Agreed. I like both versions; they each have different strengths and weaknesses, but both work well overall. There is no question in my mind that either incarnation is superior to the title track which they chose to release as the single. Heck, "Thrown Down" would have made a better album title, too. I think its implications of physicality would have intrigued people. Certainly the phrase is more intense and forceful than the pleading "Say You Will."

Too bad nobody asked me for suggestions.

Yes. What a missed opportunity. And use supine images on the album cover like we have, but maybe not have them look quite so tranquil lying there. Hint at something tumultuous.

I guess back then they did not know how well they'd be accepted after Christine, so they were trying to let everyone know that they still had what Christine offers. Bad approach.

I've never heard the non album version. someone mentioned it's on a TISL disc with 16 tracks but I've been unable to locate that. Was it released?

Here is the TISL outtake of Thrown Down, also known as the 'wall of sound' version, used in some terrible soap-opera clip compilation. If you don't know, 'wall of sound' refers to a production technique originated by Phil Spector.

From wikipedia:

Spector created a dense, layered, reverberant sound that came across well on AM radio and jukeboxes popular in the era. He created this sound by having a number of electric and acoustic guitarists perform the same parts in unison, adding musical arrangements for large groups of musicians up to the size of orchestras, then recording the sound using an echo chamber.

It has so much energy, it rocks, it pulses, it's exciting - whereas the SYW version sounds like Stevie got reprimanded before recording the vocal.

Do we have any true verification that the Wall of Sound version of Thrown Down is from the TISL sessions? It just sounds more Fleetwood Mac - Lindsey guitar playing. I always thought of it as an early arrangement and mix from the SYW sessions that obviously got re-worked later with Chris Lord-Alge got a hold of it

Thanks for posting this! Very interesting to hear. I still MUCH prefer the SYW version, as this one sounds bland, the drums sort of bombastic, a little too middle-of-the-road sounding -- although I do like how prominent Lindsey's vocals are in it.

I had to listen to this "Wall of Sound" version again because it had been a long time since I heard it. The SYW version is superior, in my humble opinion. Everything is a little more subtle, and the guitar that starts the song immediately identifies the track as a FM song. Yeah, I think they made the right choice here. The only thing I would have changed is the space-age synthesizer riff panned right on the chorus. I would have changed it to a less spacey keyboard sound or to a guitar -- or, or, or... a cello. Now that would have been cool!

It was not released. A pre-release pressing of TISL was leaked before the album tracklisting was finalized. The alternate Thrown Down is from that.

I agree with that completely. Also, I would argue that no version of Thrown Down was going to be a big hit in 2003. People who keep seeing phantom hits in FM songs from the last decade are still stuck in the band's heyday, much like a couple of the band members seem to be. Accept it: There will be no more FM hits.

The SYW version has a better arrangement but the WoS version has a better Lindsey vocal performance IMO. Combine them and it'd be perfect.

I'm excited about the prospect of a new album. I want Lindsey to have at least one song that's just a rocker with Mick and John somewhere. It can either be a Murrow/ISA-type brooding guitar track or it can be a madcap uptempo thing like Gift of Screws. Maybe one of each

I'd love THAT!!! Actually, kind of hoping that "Gift Of Screws" would've made the final SYW track list.

Which is kind of what I did for my iPod SYW tracklist...swap out other Lindsey tunes in place of the ones I didn't care for. (ditto with a leftover TISL tune from Stevie) Made the album a little more commercial sounding without losing Lindsey's quirkiness.

I'd like the same from Stevie with a rocker like Fall From Grace, Ghosts Are Gone or Wide Sargasso Sea with LB playing a Fender or Gibson...Lets throw in a fast song as well like "In Your Dreams"...
