'American Horror Story': Ryan Murphy talks Stevie Nicks' debut on 'Coven' and which witches are actually dead -- EXCLUSIVE

The “White Witch” finally made her much-anticipated debut last night on American Horror Story: Coven. Yes, the one and only Stevie Nicks popped up as a pal of Fiona’s and gave the Miss Robichaux ladies a little private concert. Elsewhere, Nan, Joan and (maybe?) Misty perished. Plus, Marie did an awesome thing her tongue. EW talked to co-creator Ryan Murphy about all this and more, like which witches are gone for good.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Let’s talk about Stevie first. Did she have a blast? How did she feel about the experience?
RYAN MURPHY: She did have a blast. She was nervous because she’s never acted. But it’s one of those weird things where you mythologize somebody for months and months and months in the scripts and then you tell the actors “Oh by the way, that person is coming.” So the anticipation for her on the set with the cast and the crew was great and everybody wanted to meet her and take pictures with her and talk to her. She’s one of those ladies that’s so gracious. She’s just an amazing soul and kind. I love that she did those songs. She just had a ball. She was also very interested in the acting part of it so she spent a lot of time on set watching them and really getting into it. Everybody couldn’t say enough good things about Stevie Nicks nor could I. She’s a great person.

How did you come up with which songs she sings?
I chose “Rhiannon.” At the end, I definitely knew I wanted her to do “Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You” which is one of my favorite songs. I thought it oddly applied to the Jessica Lange character where Fiona has had all these great opportunities and squandered them and is just looking for some peace after her horrific acts. So that was great and Stevie loved that idea. And “Rhiannon,” we put that in the script months ago and at that point I hadn’t even imagined Stevie could do the show. That song is very witchy and fun.

Now, everyone at home can learn to twirl like Stevie Nicks.
I’ve seen her in concert and Stevie Nicks is famous for her twirling and her shawl changes. I said to the writers, “Do you think Stevie would have a sense of humor about this?” Knowing her I thought I think she’ll go for it and she did. Nobody twirls like Stevie Nicks.

Lily is a pretty good twirler.
All the girls watched Stevie Nicks on repeat to get that twirl down, believe you me.

And she’ll be back still?
Yes, she’s the complete cold opening of the last episode.

Can you say if she sings?
Oh yes! Yes! It’s a Stevie Nicks music video extravagaaaaanza!

Misty sort of had the best day and the worst day. She met Stevie and then was buried alive by Madison. Is that the last we’ve seen of her?
Well there’s two things going on with Misty Day. How does one get out of a tomb? Can she get out of it or is she buried alive? We’ll revisit her torment as the clock is ticking.

I think that might have been one of our favorite scenes we’ve ever done with Lily and Emma. I love how Emma twirls away. It was great fun!

Also, worth noting "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You" saw a huge leap climbing up from the nether regions of downloads to currently be #14 most downloaded Stevie Nicks song on Itunes!

I didn't think Stevie did a good job acting, but I loved the episode. A bunch of stuff happened in this episode. I feel sorry for Nan though. That was a surprise.

Luckily, Nan seemed ok with it. And she'll be back anyway. I don't think Misty will revive her, but Legba may return in the end and she'll be part of that.

This week's episode was entitled "The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks," which ordinarily would be all you needed to know about this hour of television, but NOPE. So much more happened than that! This was a truly unbelievable episode. Going into it I mistakenly believed the rest of the season would concern the battle between the coven and the witch hunters, but that part lasted about eight minutes total and the rest of the episode turned into what's shaping up to being a Battle Royale With Witches! They all want to be supreme now and Fiona wants to murder everybody! A total of three witches are now dead or otherwise neutralized, a fourth has probably thrown her hat into the supreme ring. Angela Bassett said "shut up" to a baby. Oh and hello, there's a VOODOO DEVIL walking around hassling people. Plus, you know, Stevie Nicks. That definitely happened. I want to live in this episode basically.

HAHAH OH boy. Part of me thought this whole cameo thing was kiiinda lame sorry, but it's true. Just so on-the-nose! Like, it was already funny that this show was implying that Stevie Nicks was a real witch, so to bring her in like this felt really jarring and obvious. But on the other hand, WOW. So fun. Stevie Nicks AS HERSELF singing both "Rhiannon" and "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?" Sign me up. I would've preferred a full-on, bring-the-house down rendition of "Edge of Seventeen," sort of a centerpiece musical number like "The Name Game" last season, but oh well. I'll take what I can get.

Then Stevie Nicks gave Misty Day (LOL) one of her best shawls! Just a truly witchy moment. Also there was a bit where Madison, Zoe, and Nan came in and frowned at Stevie Nicks' old timey ways and Madison asked Fiona if she could get Eminem to come in next and Fiona replied "Marshall? You're not his type." A statement that was laced with just enough jealous glee that I have to assume Fiona has f**ked Eminem.

Man, was this crazy. First of all, just the sight of Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett teaming up to drown a woman with Down Syndrome was really something else. But then the voodoo devil shows up and leads her to voodoo hell? In my opinion this is a strange show, but then again, so is life.

Oh, and the whole time that was going on, Stevie Nicks was just chilling downstairs. WHAT was she doing? Probably looking up Lindsey Buckingham on Facebook or something. Oh, also singing Stevie Nicks songs on the piano, obviously.

The song was a very good and poignant rendition of "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?" and I think we were meant to believe that Fiona has felt neglected in her life because nobody loves her or something. But then again she had just murdered a really nice person in cold blood and is rotten to her very core, but still. The sight of her just weeping on that fainting couch was extremely moving to me. I can't believe Jessica Lange only has one more season left in her. She is so good even in these tiny moments when she is overshadowed by on-the-nose cameos. So good.

"The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks" was a series highlight, trust me. It is one of the classics. It thinned out some subplots, it reduced the character roster, it galvanized everybody's motives, it introduced a voodoo devil, it featured Angela Bassett doing a voodoo tongue-wag scream, and also it featured Stevie Nicks as herself as a witch. That is some A+ with extra credit gold star work from American Horror Story. And most of it has happened to me for real! I'll explain later.

Iconic Fleetwood Mac frontwoman and rock legend Stevie Nicks is set to appear on this week's episode of FX's hit horror anthology series AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN and the star opens up about the actress who plays a character inextricably linked to her, Lily Rabe, as well as her notably accomplished actress mother, Jill Clayburgh, as part of a new interview.

Revealing their onset interaction and how she perceives Rabe's role of Misty Day, ostensibly a walking homage to the "Rhiannon" crooner, Nicks relates, "I did give Lily a really beautiful black skirt and velvet jacket that is just fantasmagorical. I just made that word up."

Nicks continues, "She has done me a huge favor by being that girl that takes on my spirit and sends that music out into the world to a whole other generation. There is no greater gift. I thought a beautiful black outfit was the least I could do for Lily Rabe."

Commenting on Rabe's own personal loss of her mother to cancer in 2010, Nicks shares, "She lost her mom [actress Jill Clayburgh] not very long ago, one year before I lost my mom. When I wrote her the note that went with her outfit I said, 'I know you lost your mom and so did I. I'm around if you need me.'"

Nicks concludes of her strong bond with Rabe, "We'll probably be friends forever."

Twirling Tunes for AHS Characters from Bustle by Alicia Lutes

The witches of New Orleans’ most insane coven are welcoming a visit from the ultimate Queen of All This Gauzy and Ethereal, Stevie Nicks. American Horror Story: Coven returns to FX tonight in a big way, and it seems as though Fiona has some tricks up her sleeve that involve the Fleetwood Mac singer. Trying to figure out the next Supreme, perhaps? Emotional manipulation is totally Fiona’s game (and not all that surprising, considering) and she’s desperate to figure out the answer, which may involve the current Supreme contender, swamp witch Misty Day (played by Lily Rabe). Seems as though tonight’s episode — titled, of course, “The Magic of Stevie Nicks” —

After all the death that happened in the mid-season finale (hopefully some of it will actually stick), a little levity would be all-too-welcome in the delightfully dark series. And who else brings more light with her than the White Witch herself? We figured each girl deserves the power of Stevie — why should Misty Day get to have all the fun just because she was there first? So we’ve come up with a list of some of Stevie’s twirliest songs, and which witch they’re perfect for.

Lest you have any fears that the episode might be bereft of twirling, fear not! E! has a clip from tonight’s episode that proves there will be many a spin spun throughout the eve’s events. Nothing like working a fringed-out shawl to make a girl feel supreme, am I right?

She actually did put the grave workers in a type of trance, but I don't think the guy in the coffin was dead anyway. She was just tricking Misty. I think Misty is going to be a smoke screen. I think the supreme will end up being the girl who kills during sex.

Misty should be the supreme though.

This was my favorite episode so far. Jessican Lange and Angela Basset are great actresses. I love Emma Roberts performance.

Interestingly, you may be correct about Fiona and herte's why: ET Magazine reported that next years AHS will be the last for Ms. Jessica Lange in any of her AHS roles, citing that it takes a LOT of time out of her life to shoot these series.

Same here. No matter how evil she is, you can't help but love her all the more for it. She's the only one who has long-term vision & the necessary strength to keep the Coven going, too.

I keep wondering about Queenie, though. She's been entirely written off as having only 1 parlor trick. Does she have more power to exhibit? Nan's powers certainly blossomed right before her death. And what about Marie, now that she's been brought into the witches fold? What is her fate, or what sort of pivotal role will she play?
