Perhaps, but it was my understanding that snow covered hills are not what's being questioned here. The issue was whether "mirror in the sky" was a reference to some non-Christain entity.

But yes, absolutely - living in Colorado, I can tell you that indeed sometimes when you look at the sun reflecting off of the mountains, the light can reflect back at you like a mirror.

Which is just really funny since this is one of her few lyrics that just says what it means! She climbed up high, looked at the snow, and saw her reflection. She calls the snow a "mirror" because the snow is reflective, and it's a mirror "in the sky" because she climbed up into the mountains. It's that simple. But, as far as that person who came up with that interpretation, well, I guess you can see "evil" anywhere you want to if you try.

My point exactly. Landslide is far less abstract then most of her songs, and I think its clear the high frosted mountains reaching the sky are the mirror. She already said she saw her reflection in them for gods sake. :LOL: On the other hand, I find those fanatics bizarre to say the least. Why on earth would you spend your time and energy investigating and obsessing over something you hate? Isn't religion supposed to bring you inner peace and harmony? Aren't Christians supposed to love everybody, even their enemies? And I don't see how the hell could Stevie be any kind of an enemy or threat to Christianity. Does anybody really believe that there are witches out there casting spells to change the course of events and twist the free will of other people while summoning demons? Stevie built a fairytale world around her from which she obviously drains inspiration and creativity, and that's it. Millions of fans know how to appreciate that, and I've never heard of anyone of them skinning a cat in an occult ritual. I am an atheist, and will be one until there's any proof any evidence to back up religions fantastical claims, which we all know ain't gonna happen. Having said that, I completely respect anyone's choice to practice any religion. We all have our defensive mechanisms to cope with life, which isn't easy, and who am I to try to convince somebody their ways are wrong if it works for them, just because they are different then mine. I have a lot of Christian and Muslim friends which I respect and love dearly. We agree to disagree on that subject, and that's it. They know they can't change my mind, and I know I can't change theirs. What I do have a problem with are fanatics showing their believes down everybody throat, acting as it is time to bring back the Spanish inquisition, viciously undermining anyone who doesn't share their opinions.

I'm fascinated by Stevie's use of witch imagery in her music and performance. It seems that what has caused the anger and hatred towards Stevie over the years, is the perception of a witch as evil. Many of the women that were killed in the witch hunts centuries ago were innocent but labelled at evil witches. Some of them were just practising herbal medicine, or had pagan beliefs, and its likely that very few of them (if any) were worshiping the idea of Satan. There is so much fear and myth surrounding the idea of a witch. It seems more likely to me, that many witches in history were trying to be healers, rather than devil worshippers.

I've looked at the modern wiccan movement in terms of personal empowerment rather than cartoony demon worshipping evil casters of spells. The term wicca meant knowledge in old celtic I think or something like that. Witches in European history have tended to be older or marginalized women who were inheritors of herbal and medicinal plant lore not covered in the christian bible.

Rhainnon specifically was a character in the Welsh books of Mabinoginon or some such. I remember having all the Evangeline Walton paperbacks of the early '70s although truthfully not being able to plow through all of them at that age. The Rhiannon song was the bomb in 1975-76! There was also an Eagles song Witchy Woman that was also popular. Female audio empowerment, and very cool!

There was an element of this in British Folk-rock of the '70s with Steeleye Span, Archie Fisher, Fairport Convention and Sandy Denny drawing on past myths and legends including witchery. It made me want to embrace my inner witch and accept personal power, to seek wisdom. I've lately become very interested in African santaria and Haitian voodoo... it's all part of the variety of human history so why reject or judge when you can learn and possibly grow?

I will embrace being a Jesus freak too because he is recorded to have said many things that challenge and expand, it's there for all with eyes to read so why reject it if you don't have to? I find the wisdom and value it and grow with it. I love the words of Jesus and will never outgrow them not try to limit their importance. It is however a very personal conversation and any public show is to be made with caution and care.

Christianity has been a double edged sword by it's own admission. So much European pre-christian belief has been lost because of it's imposition (despite the book itself saying it should not be imposed). We need to learn from history and preserve the Native American languages and beliefs still. There are people in the musical community here in western Canada now doing this and it's an honor to know some of them.

I read a book titled Witchcraze about the dark period of murdering people labelled witches in Europe. Holland managed to find it's way out of it fairly quickly through a new understanding of the bible in line with the protestant revolution and that is the church I have roots in. The Netherlands have been a beacon of tolerance at times which has inspired other nations and it began in that dark religiously fanatical period.
