5. Lindsey Buckingham at the Saban Theatre: A special friends-and-family performance filmed for TV to highlight his upcoming solo album, the Fleetwood Mac member offered a 19-song, nearly two-hour retrospective of his career, featuring eight Mac numbers, five solo tunes and six from the new Seeds We Sow, scheduled for release in September. Buckingham is a world-class guitar player, especially on acoustic, with a thrumming style that has notes banging up against each other in cascading waves. He begins stage-center along with a guitar, starting with “Shut Us Down,” a track from his 2006 solo album Under the Skin, before launching into a slow, deliberate “Go Insane,” from his 1984 solo effort of the same name. He tells us that “the child still lives in me… as it should,” explaining how he taught himself to play listening to his older brothers’ records, before launching into “Trouble,” the 1981 hit from his very first solo album, Law and Order. That led into a pair of big Mac tunes in Rumours’ “Never Going Back” and Tango in the Night’s “Big Love,” which he describes as “a meditation on change,” explaining the line, “looking out for love” he later realized was his way of distancing himself from any emotional involvement. At this point, he’s joined by a three-piece band with Neil Heywood on guitar, Bret Tuggle on bass/keyboards and Wilfredo Reyes on drums, for a set that begins with “Under the Skin” from his 2006 solo effort Shut Us Down, then segues into his cover of the Kingston Trio’s “All My Sorrows,” from his 1992 solo album, Out of the Cradle. He then launches into a pair of songs, “In Our Own Time” and “Illumination,” from the upcoming Seeds We Sow, calling the album a “microcosm of family and relationships,” acknowledging his wife and three kids sitting in the audience, a far cry from his tumultuous pairing with Stevie Nicks back in the day, adding, “Our actions have consequences as individuals." The new songs segue seamlessly into two older chestnuts, “Second Hand News” from Rumours and his classic with the USC Marching Band, “Tusk.” Three more new songs follow, “Stars,” “End of Time” and “The Way Love Goes,” the latter finding him singing, “I’d like to take the pain away/I’d like to take your shame away.” “I’m So Afraid,” from Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 self-titled album, which marked the debut of Buckingham and Nicks, and a rousing “Go Your Own Way,” brings the crowd to its feet, as Lindsey returns for a three-song encore starting with “Turn it On,” from Out of the Cradle, “Treason,” from his last solo album, 2008’s Gift of Screws, and “Seeds We Sow,” the title track from the new album and a fitting close to a night that reaffirmed Buckingham as a world-class auteur who seems delighted to be working on a smaller “indie film” canvas that suits him better than the blockbuster-or-bust world of his famous, platinum-selling band.
