That is not to say that if I ran in to her somewhere and we found we had something in common that I wouldn't want to talk to her about that. I would enjoy it, if we both grew tulips for competition or something and we could discuss that together. But I never want to go, "Oh, I'm such a big fan. I'm so thrilled to meet you." I think that's stupid. On the other hand, there are some people that I think about talking to all the time. Cher is out with all of this Burlesque publicity and the things she is saying about Sonny are making me kind of mad and I would love to meet Chastity Bono (Chaz) and just tell her what a fan I am of her father's music and just let her know I can recite the words to even his most obscure songs by heart. Let her know that when I say I'm a fan, I don't mean I'm an I Got You Babe fan. Let her know that the best thing Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks ever did for me was Needles and Pins. Also this week I was thinking of Nigella Lawson's dead husband and thinking I wanted to meet her and tell her that the columns John Diamond wrote when he was dying of cancer stay with me until this day, almost a decade later. I remember being in the intensive care unit while my dad was having surgery and the doctor's bedside manner was so frustrating, but so exactly like what John Diamond had described in one of his columns, that I was laughing and crying in the hospital and I thought, if I ever saw Nigella Lawson or one of her kids Bruno or Cosima at an airport, I would tell her that. I just want them to know that after the initial outpouring of grief and sympathy, even years later, John Diamond's words live on. John Diamond had esophagal cancer and he did outrageous things. He would put liquor directly into his stomach tube and, of course, smoke through his tracheotomy. When Michael Douglas announced his cancer, I thought of John Diamond immediately. I so often do. So, there are people I want to gush about and I wore an LB t-shirt to one of his shows and was thrilled when he commented on it. Still, I never wanted to shake his hand. I also don't want to ask him for a guitar pick, but if one fell on the floor, I would pick it up! Michele |
