Currently putting together a poster for “Have your Cake and Eat it” brief and after swinging around ideas of what lovely Lady to bring to the platform (Virginia Woolf, Silvia Plath, Debby Harry, Elizabeth I, Amelia Earhart, The Bronte Sisters, Frida Khalo and many more ) I have settled on the enravelling summary of a song by Stevie Nicks, Gypsy, a favourite of mine and my mum’s. After almost a decade out of the limelight we got the opportunity to see Fleetwood Mac live at Wembly last year, and Stevie was in her element. After knowing the story and turbulent journey of the band, and her extensive solo career, to hear her explain and reminisce about the meaning behind each song before singing made the experience all the more intimate. She captivates the audience with her etherial wandering soul even now, always young (she’s 65). For me the song means a return to where you first started out, where you were first stimulated by the nature of simply creating something in your room, and sometimes you can lose that, it can be blurred. She became incredibly famous, but always felt like that material-less gypsy, content with the little things:

In my Doheny house – in my English house. I just went through an experience that wasn’t particularly pleasant and I moved out of my big English bedroom into the little back bedroom that was all…the lady that owned this house had put all this French wallpaper up that was flowers and it was beautifully, beautifully done. It’s just a little tiny room and put my bed back on the floor, moved my JBLs [speakers] in there, all my plants… all my junk, everything I had into this tiny little room about as big as this sofa, you know and I just lived in there for about 3 months. And I, it was really like living back in my apartment before I joined Fleetwood Mac…it was …I’m very comfortable living in one little room with my bed on the floor and kind of lace tacked up at the windows.
