1977 Behind the Scenes/Outtakes Quotes

Interviewer: I've heard that you play a mean chair. A real good chair.
Chris: If you really want to know why that happened is because Lindsey, I think, originally recorded that song - Second Hand News - at home on the four track machine and he used a chair... and the sound of it, you needed the sound of it... and there were no keyboards on that track, on the album. So they just asked me to play.. so they asked me to play the chair, doing it. I wanted to play acoustic guitar, but of course my fingers instantly turned to dust 'cause I can play guitar but not steel string, not every night, solid like that. So I ended up playing the chair. It's quite a simple story, actually. Not very interesting.

Interviewer: There is Songbird.. is an incredible song. Why, when we were in LA, I'd seen you a lot and I kept wondering why you're not singing it on stage. And..
Chris: Songbird?
Interviewer: Yeah.. and then all of the sudden you were singing it.
Chris: I hate saying this but it was Mick's idea again. Everybody just said that it would be a good way to end the set and Mick said it would be killer if you just would do the encores and just come on with a grand piano and just do Songbird to finish. But we tried it like.. 2 or 3 nights and it was devastating. The response was just devastating. I was embarrassed about singing it live. And Lindsey and John and Mick just told me I was being ridiculous and so I said okay, just to prove them wrong I said okay, I'll do it. It's a personal song and it took a lot for me to record it in the first place. And I guess it became increasingly easy as the gigs went by. I just realized that it was fun to do something like that live and the response was always so good.
Interviewer: Now I'm going to get hard. Why... I know it's a personal song, but...
Chris: Why is it a personal song? It's a love song and it's just me and the piano.
Interviewer: No, I mean, tell me.. it's you and... come on!
Chris: It's me and my dog.

Chris: A lot of people started crying.

Chris: The thing is with that song is it's so applicable to everybody and it ceases to be personal in a lot of ways. When we go on stage and we say "this is the last song for the evening" and you sing "for you" the audience relates to it "for them" It's very personal to everybody even though when I wrote it, it was intensely personal for me.

Chris: I wanted to ask you about your painted leather shoes. I mean, they're dancing shoes, aren't they? They're like the ones Mick wears on stage. I like them.
