Stevie Nicks Runs in the Shadows
Fleetwood Mac gypsy hits the road and writes her memoirs.

By Nella Nampahc, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
March 31, 2008

Los Angeles, CALIF.-- Meeting Stevie Nicks is a lot like meeting your fairy godmother. Everything you've heard about her is true: She truly is the enchanted white witch of rock, as fellow rocker Grace Slick once put it. In a telephone interview with the Fleetwood Mac singer, Nicks gave details about her upcoming solo tour with exclusive guest performers, her long talked about aut obiography and the future of Fleetwood Mac.

Beginning in April Nicks will embark on her "Dreams Unwind" tour, which will feature different special guests at each stop. "I had planned on taking a break this summer, but I got a call from my manager who suggested I do a handful of shows with different friends. I had so much fun touring with Tom (Petty) and the shows I did with Don (Henley), that I decided to do it," Nicks says. When asked who fans could expect to see Nicks said "Well we're still working that out, but so far Vanessa Carlton, Don Henley and (Maroon 5 frontman) Adam Levine are on the list." Levine is also reported to be producing Nicks' next solo album. "I wasn't sure if I wanted to even make another album, but while in Nashville last month working on the Soundstage project I did (Nicks filmed a Soundstage concert to air on PBS at a still undetermined date), I met with Adam and he said he would be interested in working on my songs. We've only recorded three or four tracks but I'm having so much fun we'll probably do the rest of the songs together."

One of the songs on the album will be the Hurricane Katrina track Nicks wrote titled "Guiding Angels" which she produced with Jack White of The White Stripes. "The track came out really good and I hope people appreciate it," says Nicks. Another track will be a new duet with Tom Petty. "While touring with Tom two years ago we ended up writing a song together; it's the first time we have done that."

About the new tour Nicks says it will be a limited run and will feature the special guests. Will she add anything new? "We have been using big video screens on the past few tours, but we haven't really used them as much as we could. So we will now be using them to show video montages and other photos while there's a break on stage. At the start of the show a video is used to sort of introduce the show to the crowd. We're using a Buckingham Nicks track at the start of the video that I think that fans who go back thirty-five years to the beginning of all of this will recognize."

Nicks says to expect some new stage songs as well. "We have been trying to decide what to cut from the set and what to add. We can't not do 'Dreams' or 'Rhiannon' or 'Stand Back.' Those songs will always be in the set. But we're adding some old favorites like 'Sara,' which I did at the Soundstage thing at the insistence of (Soundstage producer) Joe Thomas. It worked so well that it is back in the solo set after twenty years. We're also doing a Tom Petty song called 'Thing About You,' which Tom had out some years ago. It's a great song for the stage. Another song that I have always wanted to play onstage with Fleetwood Mac is a song from Tusk called 'Always Been A Storm.' The time was never right, but it's always been special to me."

So what's left for Nicks? "I just signed a book deal for my autobiography. I've been talking about it for years and decided that I should do it now before everyone no longer cares what I have to say." The book will be written with Rolling S tone contributing editor David Wild who has worked on similar projects with Tom Petty and The Rolling Stones. Talks also continue for a permanent stage show for Nicks at the exclusive Le Reve Theater at Wynn Hotel Casino & Spa, following in the steps Celine Dion, Bette Midler, and Cher, who have produced highly anticipated show s for Caesar's Palace Coliseum.

What about Fleetwood Mac? "We have just now starting talking about doing something next year." And the rumors about Sheryl Crow joining the band? "She called me with the idea, and I think it's great. Sheryl's a dear friend and has a very old rock and roll soul. She would have fit in with us in the 70's. I think it would be fun."

A tour, a book, a new album, a possible Mac reunion. How does Nicks do it all? "This is my life. I didn't sign up for this so I could sit home and plant flowers one day. As long as I can still get out there and put on the platforms and dance across the stage, I will do this. At some point I will have to stop, but I can see myself being a little eighty-year-old lady still out there singing 'Rhiannon,'" Nicks says with a laugh.

Sound a bit too good to be true, right? What's tomorrow's date again......?
