Even More Spill Canvas Splatter By now I’m sure there are people sick of reading about the Spill Canvas on this blog, in Link or anywhere in the Argus Leader. But the truth is this band simply has a lot of “newsworthy” items. The latest is word on the track listing for the band’s upcoming EP released through Sire Records. Fernando Aguilar, a publicist for Sire, says the EP will be out in May with the group’s track “Staplegunned” – I’m not sure if it’s an alternative version – and two cover songs; Donovan’s “Catch the Wind” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Gold Dust Woman.” This should be interesting. For starters, I want to hear if frontman Nick Thomas tenderfoots around the Stevie Nicks vocals of “Gold Dust Woman” or blasts through them with this latent punk ferocity. And, can the Spill Canvas rock the song harder than Hole did? Probably not. Among Courtney Love’s many flaws, that cover was killer. As for the Donovan selection, this is one of the Big D’s safer songs – a Bob Dylanesque folk ditty using nature as a metaphor for love, politics or something old folkies were obsessed with. Personally, I’d rather hear Thomas and the boys add some sex appeal to Donovan’s eery and repetive psychedlic outburst “Season of the Witch.” But if they can take “Catch the Wind” and rework it via some contemporary fashion or pathos, the band could stake a claim on the tune. I suppose this EP begs the question “When did the Spill Canvas become such big fans of classic rock?” |
