Burning DVD Help

I just got myself a new lap top with a DVD burner.
How do I burn AVI files or other files to a DVD to watch on my stand alone DVD player. Is there a specal program I need, or is it a long process.
From what I read its a hard process. I though you ledges would have some tricks.
Thanks in advance Alison
