What is it with people today? There are so many prophets of doom of one kind or another and they all seem to get on the tv and radio! It's past ridiculous. You've got this Left Behind series of books ( yeah, I get it, the 'left', ha ha) where you are supposed to get some satisfaction out of graphic descriptions of a 100 foot Jesus stepping on people like grapes, rivers of blood, the voice of God making people explode... all after those 'right'eous who proclaim themselves 'saved' are taken away.
Then from the news and the pulpit we get all these asteroids and meteors heading for us scares. Every other mountain declared capable of becoming a Mt. St. Helens or Pinatubo. Terrorists that could strike anybody anywhere at any time, but particularily on this coming June 6th. Bird flu. Mad cow. Rising oceans. Water contamination. Flesh-eating disease. E-coli. Ebola. Hepatitus. Killer bees. Tsunamis. God-sent tornadoes and hurricanes. Someone should put it all into a song titled Talking Ahrmegeddon Blues. I guess after 2000 I'd hoped the panic waves might have subsided but they have definitely increased. Well, I don't know if I'm such a bad person but I'd either like all these people to move to another planet and go freak out there or let me go there where I won't be barraged by all kinds of hysterical and often self congratulatory predictions. Jesus predicted the things he prophesied would happen "within that generation", and they happened... the romans slaughtered everyone within the walls of Jerusalem (in line with every historical account of the nature of pontius pilate besides the gospels). Ahrmegeddon was a real place as well, where a real battle happened... almost 2,000 years ago! So let's at least get this mystical-religious part of the doom crying sent packing. On yer bikes ye false prophets! And a wee kick in yer boots ye'll likely be gettin' fer bein soo happy aboot the end o' the world! Anyway, aside from those facts, 'He will come like a thief in the night', and 'none will know the day or the hour'. All should 'pray He be delayed that even just one more soul be saved', not wish for the 'end times' to come soon. Sadly too many self-proclaimed saved people don't see the timber in their eye but love to point out others' motes, as if two wrongs ever made a right. I can see it now, "Look Lord, look at how wrong and 'left' those people over there are!" Someone else being wrong doesn't equate to another being right simply because of that. But they point and point, more and more, and call names and don't like to talk about ceratin other things or be held to their own supposed standards. They do unto others, then forgot the other part of that commandment. Not much cheek turning happening in the Western world, we think we can run others' affairs while it's obvious time and again how we can't even run our own. Well, I sure could use a break from the end of the world stuff. It used to be someone in rags with a sign at the airport who was such a one note samba, not the leaders and reporters. The last time I remember feeling really optimistic about the future I think it was probably the 1970s. There are lots of good things happening still, but it's the bad things that get the attention far more than they deserve, and the fear mongers. Soundtrack to this rant: Safe In My Garden by The Mamas And Papas. One By One by The Free Design. Eve Of Destruction - Barry McGuire. |
