WHY do people go crazy at Xmas?!

I'm about to boycott the Holidays. My family is driving me F-ing CRAZY with the jealousy of who's spending time with who at who's house, who's bringing what, who'll be drunk, who'll be argumentative, etc. etc. I swear, every year I tell myself NEXT year I'm going to the East Coast to take a little holiday vacation and screw everyone else. Don't get me wrong, I know what the true meaning of Christmas is and everything, but it's the family crap that drives me nuts! This is supposed to be FUN! Why does everyone have to get so wierd???!!!!
I know I'm not the only one going through this, and I know some of this annoying family stuff is common, but I hate it because it's a problem that can be so simply controlled with a little patience and understanding among family members, you know? It's really stupid.
