Like or Dislike: Jane

[skcin]

That's right, folks . We're doing the Street Angel album now. Diss (and many other posters), I'm sure, won't bother to reply to any of these threads other than to vote "1*" for every song. Curtis, I'm sure, will write novels about how great all of them are. Let the games begin.

I like the song Jane a lot. It's probably one of my favorites on this album. I first heard it when I saw Behind the Music in 1998 (I didn't have all of her solo CDs yet at that point.) I fell in love with her vocal delivery of "such a little girl, such a hard life." I remember not knowing what the song title was, but I wanted to hear the whole thing. The harmonies on the ending "In the eyes of the world, you have done so much" are so rich. I would have liked the song to end with those harmonies, as opposed to continuing quietly for several seconds afterwards.

So. The "forgotten chimpanzee" line. Not enough to ruin it for me. Laughable, especially to the casual listener? Definitely. Doesn't bother me all that much.

The music is subdued, which I like because it does not oevershadow the vocal at all. It's a sad song, obviously, but somehow hopeful at the same time. I think her vocals are very strong here.

Live. She did do it live at a benefit, correct? No boots that I know of. I'd like to hear it once, but I don't really want to see it go into the setlist or anything. I think she could do it now & do it well, but there are many other songs I'd rather have her sing.
