The backing track on “Dreams” is as subtle and respectful as it is driving and momentous. Nicks’s voice is as pouty as ever, swirling into the ether of bliss. Live-style drum breaks thunder on the eighth bar, synths chug progressively, guitars chime angelically, deftly charging in and out of the mix as Nicks sings “You will know” for all time. Chilling. Despite the candy trance of “Say Hello” and the typical tribal sound of “Dub Shepherd,” “Dreams” almost singlehandedly salvages the album. It’s a classy take on a classic. But if you don’t get your fix of flashback from Stevie, there’s more. In postmodern style, Deep Dish remixes itself, mashing the wah-wah-pedal rip from Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing” into “Flashdance” for “Flashing for Money.”
