Nicks still hot at 57 Stevie Nicks gave an inspired performance at Bristow's Nissan Pavilion last weekend 7/14/2005 By MELISSA NIX Stevie Nicks seemed to channel the passion and pain--if not the style- -of earlier goddess-chanteuses such as Judy Garland and Billie Holiday during a recent stop on her solo Gold Dust tour. At 57, the girl still can really belt them out. The queen of mystical lyrics and diaphanous gowns sang to an adoring crowd under a sliver of moon Sunday night at Bristow's Nissan Pavilion. It was the ninth stop on her summer tour--a gypsy-rock confection that will hit 14 more cities by early August. Ingenue songstress Vanessa Carlton, who enjoyed a multiplatinum singer-with-a-piano debut with the 2002 album "Be Not Nobody," opened the show. During Nicks' first set, she rocked and wooed the crowd with spirited renditions of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "Dreams," "Rhiannon" and "Stand Back." Two giant video screens on either side of the stage made it possible to savor the details of Nicks' powerful performance regardless of seating. Time-lapsed clouds in blues and purples rushed past on the band's backdrop. "As many of you know, there was a time in which I was not well," Nicks told the crowd as she introduced guitarist and veteran band member Carlos Rios. "He always made sure I could walk onstage." She was referring to battles she waged with addictions to cocaine in the '80s and the sedative Klonopin in the '90s. But unlike Garland and Holiday, Nicks emerged from the stereotypical traps of fame--drug addictions and destructive relationships. Not without scars, but with her talent and her heart intact. In "Fall From Grace" and a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll," Nicks proved, beyond a doubt, that she still knows how to rock. "Why did I come all this way to watch you walk out that door?" she sung on "Fall from Grace," whipping her skirts and angling her arms in trademark fashion, her voice packed with intensity and edged with anger. Ever the costume maven, she changed out of her black witchy-woman skirt into an off-white outfit for "Edge of Seventeen," her hard- driving ode to young love. During the song's instrumental interlude, Nicks stooped to shake every hand she could possibly reach. A giant dove flew slow motion through a purplish haze on the backdrop behind her. The concert's climax came when she sang the most anticipated number of the evening, "Landslide." The song "is like a cat," she joked. "It has nine lives. You think it's gone, and it keeps coming back." As she sang about growing older and being afraid of life's changes, a slide show of Nicks' various incarnations flashed behind her. Baby photos cross-faded into rare footage of a suede-booted, tambourine- shaking Fleetwood Mac sex symbol and then into a solo glittery '80s diva. After a 21/2-hour performance, she thanked the crowd for coming. "You could've been somewhere else on a Sunday night, but you came here," she said. "Thank you." A few minutes later, Nicks welcomed war veterans injured in Iraq and Afghanistan backstage for a visit. Last week, she spent a day at Walter Reed Army Medical Center visiting soldiers too hurt to make it to the show. http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/F...7142005/114437 |
