I was part of a discussion last night about what is the best age to be. Most of us (all mid-40s) agreed that 30 was the best. We based it on a balance of accumulated wisdom vs. physical deterioration. Grey hair might be a big deal to a young person, but when you're looking at knee replacements, prostate exams (men), and NO hair, a little grey is nothing.
If I start to feel old, I think about the positive things that I've got because of my age. There's a lot to be said for settling into your career, having confidence in what you do, and being above the youngsters battling each other for rungs on the career ladder. I also think about things I've experienced that no longer exist and younger people will never be able to enjoy. For example: I used to love the smell of mimeographed copies and can dredge that wonderful oder up from my memory at any time. You kids don't know what you missed (or even what the hell I'm talking about). Basically, enjoy where you're at, because what you think of as problems now will seem trivial in the future. But don't fear the future, because cool stuff awaits you there. |
