Photo Printing Help

I went to get some prints made from some of the pics I took on the SYW tour with my digital camera. I don't have a photo printer yet. I have taken them everywhere from CVS and Walgreens to Ritz Camera. The very top of the pics (like Lindsey's head) gets cut off. The lab person at CVS told me that it is because my photo is actually a bit larger then 4x6. I could edit the photo to capture the top but I lose some of the bottom of the picture. It is very annoying.

Does anyone know how to fix this and if I do buy a photo printer will I have the same problem? Any info would be helpful.
