I've been listening to some Peter Green-era live shows this evening and I'm just now realizing that he must have been a huge Little Richard fan. He sang at least 5 Little Richard songs in various shows: "Long Tall Sally", "Tutti Frutti", "Jenny Jenny", "Ready Teddy", and "Keep A-Knockin'". I think Peter's own song "Sandy Mary" bears a resemblence to "Jenny Jenny" (and I'm sure to a number of other early rock'n'roll songs as well).
With other songs like "Twist and Shout" and "Tallahassee Lassie" that Peter sang live, it seems clear that he was as big a rock'n'roll influence on the band as Jeremy was. Peter really got into those songs, too - his vocals could be pretty wild! The band was amazing during those numbers - Peter and Danny blazing on guitar, Jeremy banging away on piano, and John and Mick really driving the rhythm. It's clear that they were all having a blast playing this stuff. Although some of Jeremy's work might be called '50s revivalist, for the most part the band didn't attempt to replicate the original sounds of these old songs. They seemed determined to play them rougher, harder, louder than they ever were before. I think more than anything, playing these songs gave the band a chance to really cut loose and have fun. Any comments? Agree? Disagree? |
