Record Machine: Top 5 Lindsey Buckingham Songs

After writing about Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie songs, I couldn’t very well leave out Lindsey Buckingham’s contributions to Fleetwood Mac. So let’s get to five of my favorite songs from the man himself.


Admittedly, I’m not well-versed in his solo material, so this will be rather band-centric. Still, here are the tunes I’m most into at the moment:

“What Makes You Think You’re The One”


What makes you think I’m the one
Who will love you forever?
Everything you do has been done
And this won’t last forever
Man, Tusk is full of “I am so totally over you Stevie, except not except I totally am, okay?” songs. The whole album is him angrily writing his way out, even though he wouldn’t leave the band (temporarily) for another ten years. But at the moment of writing and recording this song? He is tired, angry, and on his way.

Why don’t you tell me what’s going on?
Why don’t you tell me who’s on the phone?
And speaking of Tusk the album, I have to include the marching band-heavy title song. This song veers away from the anger (mostly) and instead turns to jealousy. I don’t know if it’s accurate to say that this is about the Stevie-Mick affair, or if it’s just a general commentary on the changing relationships within the band in general, but they somehow made infidelity … danceable? Yes, the drums are my favorite part of the song, followed closely by Christine McVie strolling around with a glass of wine in the video.

“Big Love” (Live)


You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill
I am about 1000x more into the finger-picking version of this song than I am with its 1987 Tango in The Night version, though I like that one fine. Normally, I can take or leave Lindsey’s extended guitar solos, but the one beginning around the 1:25 mark leading into the bridge — now that’s some magnificence.

“Come” (live)


Now I lay me down to sleep in this enemy bed
Tomorrow morning I will wake up hurting from the things we’ve said
One thing leads to another but I guess you know about that
Can you feel the fever?
It’s too bad Lindsey comes across as such a jerk when it comes to his personal relationships most of the time, because this song is pretty sexy. I mean, yeah, it’s still talking about infidelity, but the way he draws out the word “come?” Come, indeed. I’ll even forgive the noodly guitar solo that goes on too long — that’s how much I like this song. I wanted to include it, since I’m not sure how aware of it people are, since it comes from the post-Dance album, Say You Will.

“Monday Morning”


You only want me when I get over you
First you love me then you get on down the line
But I don’t mind
I don’t mind
I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
This 1980 live album version is fairly close to the album version, but there’s an enthusiastic edge to it that I enjoy. What a difference between this early ’70s song and his attitude that comes at the end of the decade. Here, he’s willing to endure a tumultuous relationship, but it’s still the beginning of the end for him and Stevie.
