Default Re: college

I was the first on my father's side of the family to go to college and the first to get four years on my mother's side-she got two then the Depression came and she had to leave-and it was something I wanted very badly. I was able to get a scholarship for the tuition by agreeing to teach in the public schools for 2 years, and the rest of the expenses I paid for by working in the college library. It was not easy-I had to take 6 courses a semester to get out of school in 4 years, and my parents made it very clear that 4 years was all I got. Period. Then I was to go to work.

I think you have to want college pretty badly. It's hard work academically and yes, you are treated as an adult-in other words, expected to have some sense of responsibility regarding getting your work done and showing up for class and things like that. I know it takes a lot of motivation. There are people that just don't have that motivation for that particular thing. Maybe they have it for something else, and maybe college isn't for everyone. It's one of our misconceptions in America, I think, that we all have to follow the same path.
