I was wondering what effect is used on the microphone Christine's singing into on her "Over My Head" performance for the Midnight Special. Is it the same kind of mic effect she used for "Dissatisfied" and "Remember Me" on Penguin? Or are the latter songs just a case of double-tracking her voice?
More generally, I've often wondered why Christine has occasionally allowed studio-tampering to her voice. The album version of "Love in Store" differs from the studio demo primarily because in the earlier version she is singing it pure, sans electronic effects. It sounds equally great, if not better. Throughout Tango, but especially on "Isn't it Midnight," Christine's voice sounds as if it were run through a voice oscillator and sped up. On the demo of "Everywhere" her singing is fantastic, crisp, distinctive. But once her voice is subjected to all sorts of studio tampering, her vocals on that track sound pleasant but generic. |
