Lindsey Buckingham Discusses Possibility of a Fleetwood Mac Tour, Album

LindseyBuckingham.com

Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham is in the midst of a U.S. tour in support of Seeds We Sow, his sixth solo album and the third he's released in the last five years. The singer/guitarist's professional focus now -- and in recent years -- mostly has been on his work outside of his famous band, but a number of recent media reports have suggested that the group is gearing up to hit the road again and possibly record a new album. In a Billboard interview a few weeks back, drummer Mick Fleetwood said, "All we know is we're working next year." However, in a conversation last week with ABC News Radio, Buckingham revealed that the band's 2012 plans aren't set in stone…at least not yet.

"There is nothing officially on the books for next year," he explained. "That doesn't mean it won't happen, but…it's always hard to get everybody to commit too far ahead. There's a lot of moving parts, a lot of emotional moving parts to Fleetwood Mac."

Having said that, Buckingham conceded that "there will be another Fleetwood Mac tour, probably another Fleetwood Mac album, but I don't know when exactly because we haven't put anything down on paper yet."

Fleetwood Mac's previous tour, 2009's "Unleashed" outing, was the first trek the group mounted that didn't coincide with the release of a new studio effort. While Buckingham explained to ABC News Radio that he didn't mind that the band hit the road without anything new to promote -- "There was something freeing about coming to terms with the fact that we didn't have to have anything new" -- he sounded enthusiastic about the prospect of hitting the studio again with the Mac this time around.

"I think it would be great to go in just for the process of making a new album," he explained. "I think it would be really intriguing to bring in an outside producer again, which we haven't done for a long time. Take some of that off of my shoulders so that I can maybe enjoy the process a little more…without the pressure and without the politics falling on me for that…I think we would all have fun doing that in the right situation, at the right time."

While Fleetwood Mac generally performs in arenas when they tour, Buckingham's current outing is visiting in more intimate venues. The singer says he loves both.

"Playing an arena is, obviously, a slower animal. It's a larger experience. You don't see most of the people you're playing for," he asserted. "When you play for 1,500 or less, which is what I'm doing now…you basically are making a connection with the entire room. And so that's an equally valid experience on its own terms."

He did admit that going the solo route offered certain other advantages over touring with Fleetwood, such as more creative control and less conflict.

"I love putting together new material with my [solo] band, because it's a slightly more brainy, academic process how you put the pieces of the puzzle together to make the songs translate on stage," he explained. "No politics involved with the situation, unlike Fleetwood Mac, as you could imagine."

Still, Buckingham insists that he's glad to be able to split his time between what he calls "the big machine" and "the small machine."

"I feel lucky that I've been able to kind of walk this road over a period of time and somehow strike a balance between the two," he said.

Buckingham's U.S. solo tour is scheduled through a November 14 show in Catoosa, Oklahoma. He also has a series of December concerts lined up in the United Kingdom.
