Not at all. Honestly, when I told people I was going to Amsterdam I got so tired of hearing, "Oooh...Amsterdam!" *Wink, wink, nudge, nudge*
I saw nothing the slightest bit scandalous. Granted, that probably had a lot to do with the fact that I was there with my mom, but it's a gorgeous, clean, well-run city. The entire populace is not lighting up all day.

Did you have a good time?

We were not close at all, and it had been many years since we'd spoken, but there was something very chilling about closing out the final chapter of one's life, especially when it ends so suddenly and violently. The apartment was pretty much as it was the day she left it. A friend of a friend had come up from Philadelphia to take her clothing (he was opening a vintage store) and a few pieces of furniture. But I had to do something with the rest of it- books, CDs, cookware, etc. I did manage to disperse most of it to friends, but it was those last few remnants that were most haunting. In a back closet I had found boxes of meticulously packed law school notebooks. What the hell was I going to do with that? All at once it dawned on me how kind of meaningless this all is. I am not one for monuments are leaving legacies, but this symbolized all of the struggle and hard work we put into our lives, yet, at the end of the day, it's just... garbage. Four years of studying, schooling and student loans basically resulted in a few anonymous boxes to be left at the curb along with the rest of the day's trash. It was so disturbing to me that, in an instant, a person's presence on the planet can be completely erased. And it all boiled down to those stupid boxes.

And what was really, really chilling was when I was going through her books, I found that this particular title was pulled out, almost as if she was in the midst of reading it. I believe it was supposed to be a crow flying above St. Paul's Chapel, but it kinda looks like a plane to me...

The image on that book cover is haunting. Sucks that you had to go through that. I hate the thought of anyone having to deal with my things when I'm gone.

To all who gave me supportive words -- thank you so much. This is definitely a "first cut is the deepest" situation and I'm reeling worse than I ever imagined. I'm sure I'll get over it with time -- I'm resilient as hell -- but in the meantime, I feel like I've lost my sense of self, who I am in certain ways.

So, so eerie... I can't tell you how shocked I was to hear about your sister when you told me in LA. I couldn't even begin to imagine being in the position that you were in and after hearing these details, it's even more mindblowing to me.

Yeah, I fall into random crying/borderline hyperventilating spells. I am no stranger to dark emotions-- my childhood was a full blown sh*tshow and also, as a writer, it's important to cling to the dark and the light. I've gotten pretty good at letting my emotions run their course while also maintaining a certain level of control over my life in terms of productivity, etc. If I was suffering through something, no matter how intense, I was still able to see the beauty in life. Now, the entire world is dull to me. It's unlike anything I've ever experienced... nothing makes me all that happy or all that sad. And it's affecting my daily life -- I've gained weight, I'm losing clumps of hair, I can't sleep. I'm fine with emotions but I'm not fine feeling out of control of my own life because of them.

That's what bugged me when people learned I was going to Amsterdam, because I'm just not that kind of person. We did walk through the red light district inadvertently after a long day of walking from gallery to gallery, but that was about all the scandal we had. Well...I tell a lie. We went to the Sex Museum too, but I practically walked around with my eyes closed so I don't think that it counts haha. So uncomfortable :s I was more taken with the architecture than anything else, and especially the local parks which were incredibly stunning. Especially because they all seemed to have a random guy playing Guitar which completely made the atmosphere. There's nothing better than sitting in a tree in Amsterdam listening to a Guitar playing and taking in the surroundings. I didn't even mind when it rained. I had a wonderful time! Thank you for asking I was ill with sun stroke on the last day, so rather than traipsing through the last of the galleries myself and another friend sat in the most homely, dingy cafe called Rooie Nelis while the others walked around in the sun. It was absolutely splendid, and I wanted to take the cafe home with me haha.

I just stepped on a big toad. I didn't even realize what happened until I heard the loud "SQUISH!" noise. Then I turned around and saw the poor creature laying on it's back wheezing for breath with it's guts coming out. I'm so traumatized!

I just got home from being out and the recent rains have brought out the frogs on the roads and you try but can't help but run over a few sometimes. They are everywhere esp. at night and will be this way for months.

First thought: Poor toad!!

Second Thought: Please tell me you were wearing shoes.

It sounds like a plague. Is this a common thing for this time of year?

Yes especially when driving in the outskirts of town/residential roads inland, they come out like crazy when it rains during the summer. When my sister came down to visit last summer she couldn't believe how it sounded at night with all the frogs and toads making their ruckus. If you live near any kind of Florida jungle, you will hear them after a daily rain or at night. It's almost eerie.

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
It's probably just as well
