"Personally, I think every single Stevie fan should share the youtube link of Secret Love via the social networking sites you use. In other words, post it to your Facebook page so your friends, coworkers, and relatives might hear it. We want to help build excitment and spread the word about Stevie's new album. The youtube Secret Love has gotten 3,500 hits in 24 hours... and this is likely just from the hardest core Stevie fans. This can be a grass roots thing, y'all. Let's toot our girl's horn and spread the word... it's been ten LONG years!" From Louie

thank you louie - I have been somewhat watching the posts and following youtube and fb and watching the hits grow and as soon as I saw it on Rollingstone.com with a blurb describing Secret Love as a much circulated bootleg demo by fans I knew this was a marketing campaign.
I used to do things like this for a presenting house of national and international tours. They are garnering a ton of FREE publicity and its in the right places.

So spread the word me brethren (all the ledgies) lets make this Stevie's major comeback!

To argue by analogy, if I don't put any anti-theft devices on my car, are you then free to "borrow it" or "take it" without my permission?

Again, I personally do not know WB intention, but some of you seem express that you do know. You might be right.
Wrong analogy. Just because you don't have any anti-theft on your car does not mean it will get stolen, they still need the keys. WB could have put this song out there and just not made it available for download. Yes someone can hotwire a car, and yes someone could figure out a way to make an mp3, but these things are not skills of the general public. But rather, they gave us the keys. If you leave your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition on a late night in Compton and someone steals your car, don't expect much sympathy. Yes, they didn't have the right to steal your car, but you should have been smarter because you knew it was HIGHLY likely someone would steal it. Kind of like if you put a boat outside and the wind blows it away, your insurance will not cover it. It doesn't make the sharing of the song legal in any way, but WB is well aware of their risks, and by their blatant lack of security for this song, and evidence that they are not actively removing this song shows either one of two things: 1. They are really dumb and don't know songs released like this will spread like wildfire or 2. They are using this knowledge to their advantage. I'd say it's about a 99.99% chance it is #2.

Have you ever read the book. "How to win friends and influence people"? People are more keen to do things when they think they are their idea. Warner Brothers uploading it to their site makes it look like they are selling people a product. A random person uploading it and sharing it with you makes it seem like you found a product you may want to buy. Plus, they have to pay people to put this up on a website and start spreading it. It is so much easier to let the fans do it for free. Plus, the fans are in the know of where to place to song to get it spread. WB can only put it on YouTube, it is up to us to put it on our Facebooks and twitters. Also, the reason they don't offer a free download to everyone is because they are in it to make business. Why offer it for free when you can lock people into buying the entire album MONTHS before it's release and it will still get spread around? WB will release the song for free to everyone once it hits radio stations Feb 3.

I once paid upwards of $80 for on CD and a bunch of singles by Cocteau Twins for what could have been one really good double album. Yes, they made more money from me, but I felt really cheated as a consumer. And now with various retail stores offering different versions of albums and iTunes offering album only tracks I often still feel cheated. But that is the nature of things.
Duran Duran have pulled a very clever trick with their last album: they released a nine-track version on iTunes a few weeks ago and will release a twelve-track physical CD in February. The hardcore fans are the ones who get screwed because of course they'll buy both versions. I probably will do, and it's very clever really, but I think it's pretty meanspirited to manipulate your most loyal fanbase like that

Very apt, I'd never thought of it like that before but you're dead right.

I am only guessing that Reprise is pleased for every listen the song gets on youtube. It seems to be an edited version of what will be on the cd, and it's like free airtime, without having to pay for commercials. I think it will only help sell 'In Your Dreams' by having the song on youtube, and Reprise wouldn't mind it help selling the cd to new fans. As others have said, it's a given SN's fans will buy it, so I hope it gets way more than the 3500 hits, at last count, that it has, way up into six digits- that would be an excellent sign that there's a ripe audience beyond The Ledge to buy the full cd in May.

I really your site. Question: Why does the song sound less muddled on your site then youtube? It sounds clearer. Is that from youtube?

UndoingTheLaces originally wrote: I'm also pretty pissed to hear that the advanced download of Secret Love is an edit. Sure, it's a market practice that is often used and may have been done knowing the song would be leaked but for those who spent the money on the pre-release it's a pretty ****ty thing to do. It's sad when the people who do the right thing are the ones who get screwed.
As a side note, I always had a great respect for Stevie in that manner for TimeSpace. She knew full well that giving fans three new songs and several remixed versions of existing songs that the new fans would not be affect by the changes and existing fans would not feel cheated for having to shell out money for songs they already owned. I think it was a perfect "greatest hits" CD.
Oh and Nikolaj, I appreciate your response. I, myself, due to some bad decisions and medial expenses in the past have bad credit, I have no credit cards and I live paycheck to paycheck. I blame nobody but myself and I make no excuses. But if I want to spend $500 for a really good concert ticket I have to start planning months ahead, perhaps give up a summer vacation or another large purchase. Sure, it can be done but not quite as easy as simply putting it on a piece of plastic. But I'll keep your advice for when I'm
lucky enough to be in a better financial standing such as yourself.

UndoingTheLaces, you certainly write passionately and informatively. I'm sorry that what I wrote about credit cards seemed 'boojey-wha'- I just know of no way to get good tickets other than by paying via credit card. You clearly are more informed than I am.
Certainly, I should have considered that some people actually do plunk down cash, either at the box office or at a broker, and it was a little heartless of me to say 'it's only plastic you can pay off at your own pace,' if that clearly isn't the case. I don't think I knew, but probably could have deduced it, based on your original comments.
I hope never to be in such "a better financial standing" to be unkind. Broke or rich, I don't want to be unkind or without empathy.
I'm in some cc debt, though it is manageable, and almost like a game to me. But, I'm nuts
I enjoy paying cards off and seeing how long I can go without using them, and seeing what limits get raised up to, sometimes quite randomly, it seems.
I do understand how credit cards can become a problem. It was naive of me to think that others would have cards with funds available had they been paying all along. You mentioned past medical bills. I am sorry.
I'm single, for all I know, you could have 4 kids, college tuitions to consider, and a mortgage, along with your past medical issues.
You deserve the best seat of anyone in the house if you're paying cash for it!
By the way, I have to pay my psychiatrist and psychologist and for my meds without insurance, and if I were smarter, I'd try to change companies to get it all covered, but it seems it was "a pre-existing condition." It's too mortifying to try to fight it, especially if I feel like I'm dealing with being judged about things insurance companies know nothing about. I can write about it, but to speak to someone about personal issues and get down to dollar discussions and why I am unworthy of coverage is not comfortable for me.
So, I really know what it's like for a wrong comment to make things worse, and I am sorry if I made you feel irked.
I was, obviously, being a big 'irk off' --assuming so much that I didn't know anything about.
May you be in the front row, and affordably!
