Ive read almost all of the posts on here some good alot bad and my 2 cents is Lindsey is the Roger waters of fleetwood mac. Both artists are very much alike both contributed most of the force in the bands and then leaving to do their own thing. While both are far from mainstream they are some of the best artists/songwriters in music.Alot of People complained about Lindseys voice but I remember Frank Sinatra had lost his voice along time before he quit singing and he knew it and said as long as people are willing to come and see him perform he would be willing to sing.Lindsey is losing his voice but I still love to listen and see him perform.I could go on but thanks

That's an interesting point of view, especially for someone whose two favourite bands are Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd. i.e. me.
I actually always thought, if anything, that the reverse is true. i.e. that Lindsey is the David Gilmour of Fleetwood Mac. There is obviously the guitar similarity, but much more importantly he was always fighting (i.e. fighting Roger Waters) for creative freedom in Pink Floyd. When Lindsey left, his leaving was an "emotional and physical survival move". He couldn't take it anymore and on his own BTM he said that he "was fired". i.e. it wasn't a happy choice for him to make, but he had to do it, for multiple reasons. Roger Waters however was hellbent on dominating all the creative processes of Pink Floyd, and seemed to be convinced that, as Syd was "gone", he was Pink Floyd. An attitude that resulted in Richard Wright being told to leave, and almost all of The Wall and all of The Final Cut being written by Roger. He then decided by himself that the Floyd was over, and even took David Gilmour to court for continuing Pink Floyd in his absence. A case which I'm glad he lost - he did not solely form Pink Floyd, so it's not for him to end. Lindsey has never, and quite rightly so, said that he "is Fleetwood Mac", and of course did not ask the band to break up in 1987 after he left, even though the "mega-success years" of Fleetwood Mac happened when (and could be strongly argued to be as a direct result of) he and Stevie joined the band. Roger used Pink Floyd simply as a brandname for, in effect, what was slowly becoming practically his solo career, which is why he obviously couldn't have cared less if any of the band members had chosen to leave. He is an extraordinarily talented man, and he used that talent to channel his intense emotions related to his father's death (i.e. The War), his experiences as a child (school), and Syd (madness) in his final few Floyd albums....however there exists an equally talented man, David Gilmour, who should have had equal rights in the band to Roger. There is a very obvious emphasis on equal track times / track no.s in Fleetwood Mac and a general feeling of equality in terms of freedom for the writers in the studio. In fact, out of the Rumours-line up writers, Lindsey was probably the most humble. Remember the incident where someone had stuck a "Genuis At Work" sign on the door of Lindsey's studio, and Lindsey wrote underneath it "yea, but I'm just here till he gets back". Compare that attitude with Roger's most recent comment about David Gilmour in the latest issue of Uncut magazine: (not verbatim) "David's mother always wanted him to be a leader, but he doesn't have what it takes." Not only is he saying that he himself did have what it takes to be a leader, but is also having an unjustifiable dig at David. The fact that David very comfortably took over as "leader" in 1987 for "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" and led the very pleasing evolution of Pink Floyd makes Roger's comment unjustified, and slightly immature. The Gilmour-produced PULSE concert is surely one of the greatest live performances in the history of music. I think there are really only 2 major similarities between Pink Floyd and Fleetwood Mac. The first is very uncanny: that they both lost their original front man to LSD. The second is that both bands contain (or rather contained in the case of the Floyd) 2 often-disagreeing members who have been directly responsible for the mega-success of the band, and most fans seem to "take sides" with one member or the other. Saying one member is better than the other becomes almost like a personal insult for such fans. In the early-mid 90s, all FM fans thought that the chances of Lindsey ever resolving his differences with Stevie and re-joining the band were as good as zero. The great majority of FM fans are fans of the Rumours-line-up and so the "Fleetwood Mac dream scenario" occured in 1997 when those particular 5 people took to the stage one last time. It seems inconceivable that Roger and David will ever be friends again, let alone bandmates. When asked about Roger in the Uncut magazine interview, David responded "I have nothing to say about Roger anymore. I haven't seen him in such a long time that I don't know who he has become". David has also said on several occasions that he is unable to hold a grudge, and so if Roger wanted to come back he would be very welcome. Given this comment, and seeing as neither of their solo careers are worth (both musically and financially) even a tiny fraction of Pink Floyd, I don't understand why Roger doesn't show some maturity and talk things over with David. If Lindsey and Stevie can do it, then THEY can do it! He has already "made up" with Nick Mason (and apparently Richard Wright). Seeing Roger and David being friends again would no doubt make millions and millions of Floydians ecstatic. Seeing them re-group and take to the stage a la "The Dance".....well...........that would just blow us away to the dark side of the moon. ![]() p.s. Welcome to The Ledge dougb. ![]() |
