Default 40 years ago today...

Granted, most of you aren't old enough to remember this when it happened and probably even fewer of you even recall reading or hearing about it...but it was definitely a day in US history that shouldn't be forgotten...right up there with 12/07/45 & 09/11/01....

In the words of Neil Young....

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Between the famous photograph and the very well known song (and war) associated with that day, I'm not sure its quite a stretch to think that most adults of any age in this country aren't aware of this tragic incident.

That said, it should never be forgotten. Deca anniversaries such as this one are always jarring in the way they cause us to think about where we've been and where we're at.

I wasn't alive when that happened... but I feel the story in that song. It still moves me when I hear it.

Upon learning about this years ago in history class, I have since had a recurring nightmare that I was there when it happened. Usually about once or twice a year, it sucks.

Do you die in the dream? Maybe you are the poor soul in the picture.

not to get off topic or take away any reverence to the event - but I was just looking at the famous photo taken that day and it amazes me that someone a) was right there with a camera b) had their wits about them enough to take a photo and c) have it captured the raw emotion of that moment.

If it were me holding the camera in that spot on that day I would be running/ ducking/ screaming like nuts and if I DID think to snap anything it would be such a horrendous blur...I get excited and jumpy taking pics at a Stevie concert let alone a fresh murder scene.

Also, Is it a little disturbing to anyone that this person's knee-jerk reaction is to snap a pic and not to go try and help a shooting victom???

I don't know.. there are several people casually walking around in the iconic photo.

And, honestly, how long does it take to snap a photo? Granted, historical photography is a major, major interest of mine (I'd never put art over life).. but, really, I don't think this photo was taken immediately after the person was shot.

No, but I am always walking by and see it happening. Including the people screaming and panicking.
