Is it possibly sanctioned by Stevie or her management that a tribute act known as 'Bella Donna- A Tribute To Stevie Nicks' is linked on PollStar for a Las Vegas engagement, selling tickets? The PollStar link is below... SN or her lawyers or managers may approve, but wouldn't she have to give consent? Stevie has toured regularly since 1997, doesn't she own the rights to her name, if not her album title and isn't another act using her name and songs an invasion of her lively-hood, or something? (Oh, me and those legal terms...)
This same act has downloads for their versions of Stevie's hits on amazon.com at the same price as what downloads of Stevie herself cost. I'm wondering if her lawyers and management just don't know about it, but who the hell would want to buy the downloads or their cd when Stevie's are the real deal? I know that several years ago lawyers representing Cher closed down a Cher tribute performer (a guy) and some fans (of the real Cher) thought that it was an unkind thing to do to the guy who apparantly was a big fan and did a great Cher, yet I think a person and a perfomer certainly owns their own identity, so I thought it was smart. A certain casino was able to use another Cher impersonator (a woman) in the casino's 'Legends' act which was popular for some time. I believe the casino in question paid a fee to the various stars' managers or estates who were impersonated in those Legends Live Concerts I wish LukeA might see this message. (If you are embarassed that I put your name in the thread title, I'm sorry and won't do so again). I don't understand how royalties and/or licensing of a star's NAME and IMAGE and self-written songs can be appropriated by a tribute act, I bet Luke would. But I have a feeling this is not really a good thing, unless of course, I'm wrong! I don't see when Stevie would have had the chance to approve it, she worked all last year and has been busy this year with The Grammys and recording. And I think the selling of Stevie songs on amazon by this act may have also flown under the radar. I think fans want the real Stevie and not a tribute act, so how successful can they be? I also think it's a different issue than the Night of 1000 Stevie's, because that's an annual event that doesn't quite seem the same- plus she has said she's fine with the 1000 Stevies Event. But what if Stevie wanted to play Vegas next month or whenever, and this tribute act had just Stevie-d out the town? I know that's unlikely, but somehow it seems wrong for PollStar to have a Stevie tribute act on their site when just months ago they had Fleetwood Mac dates listed. http://www.pollstar.com/resultsArtis...=bella%20donna Last edited by Nikolaj; 03-19-2010 at 10:55 PM.. |

Hi, Stevie is aware of Bella Donna -- I don't think Bella Donna could "Stevie out" the town. People will always want Stevie Nicks herself even if Bella Donna just played somewhere. I think that's a given (with no offense to Bella Donna at all).
If Royalties are paid from Stevie's songs when Bella Donna sells them - it's legal. My guess (and I have no clue but just from what I personally know), she probably doesn't even make a profit from them because it goes all to royalties. I know when I have had to look into royalties for another project, it's basically paid up front. You have to pay for so many copies (say, ie. 500). Also, there are hundreds upon thousands or more of Tribute Bands in the US alone. Yes, Tribute bands (including Bella Donna) do well and people enjoy them very much. It is extremely popular.
