How is it possible for the instrumentation--every last lick, every last riff, every last vamp line, even every last make & model of instrument--to be identical in the 1984 version & the 1994 version (a 10-year separation)? My question is rhetorical--the answer is implicit in the tone of the question.

I always thought the 94' released version on the b-side of the"Blue Demin" cassette single, was the 84' final mixed version that was shelved. Stevies vocal on it are RAL era for sure, and all those 80's synths. The answer seems implicitly obvious. The real question is why did she arbitrarily release a 10 year old finished outtake as a b-side on a brand new single?

(Christopher-) EDIT**** SORRY. This message was supposed to be a reply to DAVID, who I have never known to be wrong about Stevie or Fleetwood Mac information. Could you read below and see if it sounds right, because I'm certain it's correct, but maybe it's what you meant??

Maybe I misunderstand what you wrote...
But this linked version of 'Mirror Mirror' indeed does have the same musical track, which is what I think you wrote. But the vocal is totally, totally different from what was released on the 'Blue Denim' cassette and cd single in 1994.
Maybe you know this. Or maybe it was a later comment by someone else who wrote 'why did she release a 1984 song on a 1994 single?' that's confusing me. The 1994 version was a new 1994 vocal over the old 1984 musical track. If you know that and I'm being dense, I'm sorry.

I like them both. Never heard this youtube version with the earlier vocal before. But, I do think the finished, released vocal was better. I loved it then and still do, especially how she wailed 'I think you walk a thin line, walk a thin line' near the end on the released version with the newer vocal. It's got that edge in her voice that gives me the chill factor when Stevie hits a certain grainy reverberation she will sometimes still do.
We got it for a few seconds recently on The Soundstage dvd when she held the "KNOW" note ( " I KNOW what it sounds like") at the finish of 'Edge'. Hold that note like that SLN- chills! Love it!
Anyone who missed it, check out that final (i KNOW) on Stevie's Soundstage. Ear Viagra

Ooops- I was actually responding to David in my reply, not Christopher.
The version in this link has an earlier vocal for certain, the released vocal in '94 had a much stronger and harder edged vocal. I do think it's the same musical track for sure, and she just took her old vocal off and redid it. Like I said before, I think she sang the hell out of it, more so than what you hear in the first message of this thread.

Sorry, Mirror Mirror has never appeared on cd anywhere, only the cassette single.

I don't know much about recording music, but aren't the instrument parts and the vocal parts two separate components that are combined later? And no one sings into a mic at the same time that the musicians play their parts, all in the same room?
Because then it all makes sense, the 'Mirror, Mirror' music was sitting in a can somewhere, and Stevie Nicks was able to lay down many sets of vocals to go with it, from 1984 or 1985, right up until 1994.

BTW, this vocal on 'Mirror, Mirror' is probably my favorite. I think no matter what version, it is an awesome song. The guitar parts are so cool. It really rocks, a little.

Okay maybe I need to look in the mirror but I still don't get it! Someone please tell me! Is the 1994 version ( Blue Denim B side) actually the exact same recording as this 1984 version or did she put new vocals on it? In other words do 2 differnent versions exist or was it the same one recorded one year and released 10 years later?

I guess that's what happened. There's no other explanation for it (unless the "new" vocal is really an old one).

The whole thing is sooooooooooo weird. But then Stevie Nicks is weird. Sweet lady, though.

I was going to avoid this thread, since I already had it out back on the old AOL Stevie Board back in 1995. But, oh well.

A good friend of mine (a well-respected Ledgie!) gave me 5 versions of "Mirror, Mirror" in April 1994, months before the US single of "Blue Denim" came out.

The version of "Mirror, Mirror" on the b-side of the "Blue Denim" was one of these 5 versions.

It gets even better:

My friend, the well-known and loved Ledgie, got ALL FIVE versions in 1985, including the version/vocal that ended up backing "Blue Denim". My friend? She's not a liar or scammer ~ we ALL, every single Stevie Fan who loves demos, are in her debt for the amount of Stevie Goodness she has shared over the decades. She's had this vocal since 1985.

David, you are being very nice and diplomatic. But I'll say it where you are being a gentleman and politely dancing around it:

The "Mirror, Mirror" vocal on the b-side of "Blue Denim" is from 1984, not "newly-recorded" in 1994.

Stevie records several takes of songs, and each sounds different. I have 22 "Julia"s and 21 "The Dealer"s, and Stevie sings them differently every time.
