I'd ask them if they knew the full extent of Stevie's cocaine habit while it was happening, and how they handled that.

I wonder if they ever did an intervention with her? I'm sure they were worried.

Then I'd gush over how talented she is, and how they must be so proud of her career
There's an interview where Stevie discusses her father intervening - he sat her down at her kitchen table at her house in Paradise Valley, and talked with her all night, and persuaded her to go into rehab. This was presumably the reason she went into rehab the first time right after the Red Rocks tour.

Stevie: Well, I spent three years writing songs after the "Street Angel" tour. I probably have six songs, so I'll come home to Phoenix in September to write the other six. I can do anything here. I can record, I can write. I can sit by the pool. I can draw. My house here is like my own little resort. At midnight, if I want to, I can go in, light candles and put a fire in the fireplace and spend two hours writing.

Jancee Dunn (interviewer): Fireplace? In that heat?

Stevie: We just crank the air conditioner.
I love this about Stevie--she is just so removed from reality sometimes!

There's that, but I want details. I'm sick like that.

I wouldn't ask them a question aside from a How are you today?, I'd thank them for giving us Stevie

You'd be surprised how much of your bravdo would disappear when you meet people face to face as opposed to the anominity the internet gives you. (I don't mean just YOU personally, btw). Someone posed a similar question to Lori Nicks, rather than an almost 90 year old woman a similar question on the Nicks Fix a while ago. Here is her answer:

from Greg in San Francisco
Since you and Sharon are so close to Stevie, how come you were unable to prevent her addition to pain killers and cocoaine? How could you NOT notice she was taking drugs?! I haven't heard any statements from you or Sharon taking any responsibility for taking care of someone thousands of people love and care about.

Lori's answer:

Hello Greg...
This is an interesting question, and a very heavy one. It’s also rather personal, and not one that I feel is really any body’s business but mine, Sharon’s, and Stevie’s. However, I will say that when one decides to get into drugs, whether their friends try to stop them or not, if they don’t want to stop, there’s not much anyone can do.... even those who have had interventions. Often times if you push an addict too hard, they cut you out of their life, then making it impossible to help them at all. Ultimately, it is the addict’s choice to stop. I could tell you of many addicts who went to rehab, and overdosed after they came out. Stevie is an extremely strong and determined woman, and no one has ever been able to tell her what to do. She is a woman who makes her own choices, and she is the one who made the choice to stop doing drugs (and smoking, by the way)!

If it was so personal, Stevie would never have mentioned her addiction to anyone in the first place. Yes, I would deffinatley ask them if they new she was addicted to drugs. That's the one thing that I will never understand with celebrities, including rock stars, "We never knew the drugs were bad..." I love it when they say that. Of course they knew. That's why they call them drugs. They are adults and they knew right from wrong. That's just an excuse. Yes it was considered normal in those days for musicians to drink a lot, smoke, do drugs and screw around. Hell, some of them are probably still doing it to this day, but I always wondered if Stevie's parents knew about her addiction, and did they even know that what she was doing was wrong and did they do anything to try and help her. I know it may seem like a personal question, but then again, they may not have never knew about it either. I'm not bad mouthing Stevie in anyway at all, I love her with all my heart. I love that quote she said about her addiction, "Let me be the one to make the mistake; Don't you make it too." She is our teacher and I can tell you this, I've learned a lot from her.

" Mr. Nicks, is it unreasonable of me to ask you a question since you're dead, and all?!"

PS- Hours later...- Apology necessary, this was an obnoxious and disrespectful comment to make; at the time, I meant it jokingly and thought it harmless. Now, I think it was crude to 'joke' about the death of anyone's father. I apologize again. Thanks for the PM, I messed up.

And Sharon's answer was correct: There is no way you can reason with anyone in that state. I'm not curious about why Stevie's parents didn't intervene, I was just wondering what they thought of it. Aside from the obvious, of course, they're not gonna say they thought it was great. :P But we've never heard specifics from them, like, "When we first saw Stevie on the Midnight Special and she looked like a blazed sheepdog, we thought---"

Gets me every time. Totally do not buy that. Even in '75, someone as (supposedly) sheltered as Stevie would have to know that cocaine is not a recreational drug. Did they tell her that about LSD when she took that?
